🇯🇵🇺🇸 Futenma Base Return Still Decades Away

Thirty years after Japan and the United States agreed to return U.S. Marine Corps Air Station Futenma to Japanese control, the replacement facility in Nago's Henoko coastal area remains unfinished due to local opposition, legal disputes, and construction complications. Japan's Defense Ministry has indicated the earliest possible return of the Futenma site is 2036.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara stated that construction would continue on the basis that relocation to Henoko is the only viable solution. Okinawa Governor Denny Tamaki countered that the current plan would not remove the dangers posed by the Futenma base in the shortest possible time.

The U.S. Defense Department informed a congressional watchdog that the United States would continue operating Futenma unless Japan identifies an alternative runway of sufficient length. The original base has a 2,700-meter runway, while the planned replacement would feature two 1,800-meter V-shaped runways.
