🇰🇵🇰🇷 North Korea Fires Missiles Twice in One Day

North Korea launched short-range ballistic missiles from the Wonsan area on two separate occasions on April 8, according to South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff. The first launch at around 8:50 a.m. sent missiles approximately 240 kilometers before they fell into the sea; a second launch at around 2:20 p.m. produced a missile that flew over 700 kilometers.

The back-to-back launches marked North Korea's fifth confirmed ballistic missile launch of the year. North Korea's first vice foreign minister, Jang Kum-chol, stated that recent signals from Pyongyang constitute a clear warning to Seoul, describing South Korea as the North's most hostile state.

The Joint Chiefs of Staff said it is sharing information with the United States and maintaining a posture to respond to any provocation. US Forces Korea stated that the launches do not pose an immediate threat to US personnel, territory, or allies, and that it is consulting with allied partners.

There is almost no traffic in the Strait of Hormuz after the announcement of a ceasefire in the US-Israeli war against Iran, CNN reports.

Ships and insurers need positive signals before resuming traffic in this waterway, CNN writes, citing open shipping data and expert opinion.

“A ceasefire is a necessary first step, but it does not mean that commercial shipping will immediately return to normal on international shipping routes in the strait,” former US Navy officer and shipping expert Charlie Brown told the American television channel.

According to him, “shipowners, as before, expect official recommendations through maritime security channels, from flag states (the countries where the ship is registered) and, most importantly, from maritime risk insurers before sending ships back into the strait.”

If the first ships to venture through the Strait of Hormuz successfully complete the transit, it would be a “real signal,” and others would follow, Brown said. Since the war began, Iran has attacked at least 19 ships near the Strait of Hormuz, which connects the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman.
