🇵🇰🇨🇳 Pakistan Eyes RMB Bonds, Listings in Hong Kong

Pakistan's consul general in Hong Kong, Riaz Ahmed Shaikh, has stated that Pakistani institutions are preparing to issue renminbi-denominated bonds in the city. Pakistani firms are also considering using Hong Kong as an offshore RMB hub to invest in yuan-linked financial products and adopt the currency for trade settlement.

According to People's Bank of China data, RMB settlement in China-Pakistan goods trade reached 19.4 billion yuan in 2024, accounting for 23% of total bilateral trade volume. Shaikh noted that Hong Kong could play a key role in financing projects under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor as it enters a second phase focused on corporate development.

At least one major Pakistani company is considering a primary or secondary listing in Hong Kong, though the Hong Kong Stock Exchange does not currently recognize the Pakistan Stock Exchange as a qualifying bourse. Pakistani firms would first need to list on an approved exchange before becoming eligible for a secondary listing in Hong Kong.
