🇲🇾🇮🇷 AirAsia X Raises Fares 40% on Fuel Spike

AirAsia X announced a 40 per cent increase in ticket prices and a 10 per cent reduction in overall flights, citing the impact of the war on Iran on fuel costs. Group CEO Bo Lingam stated that average jet fuel costs had risen to approximately US$200 per barrel from around US$90 previously.

US-Israeli strikes on Iran in late February prompted Tehran to effectively close the Strait of Hormuz, disrupting global oil supplies and leading multiple international airlines to raise fuel surcharges. Founder Tony Fernandes described the price increases as unavoidable, adding that capacity would be cut on routes unable to cover elevated fuel costs.

AirAsia X also faces the threat of jet fuel supply shortages across the region, including in Malaysia, Vietnam, and the Philippines. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim indicated the country could face fuel supply uncertainty as early as June, while AirAsia X officials described the overall 2026 profitability outlook as manageable but dependent on the duration of the conflict.

Fire Point co-founder and chief designer Denys Shtilerman said that the company aims to reduce the cost of intercepting a ballistic missile to less than $1 million.

"We plan to intercept the first ballistic missile at the end of 2027."
