The Democratic Republic of Congo has launched its first national census in more than 40 years, backed by $30 million in funding from the United Nations Population Fund. UN officials described the exercise as a development milestone that could reshape planning and resource allocation across the vast country.

The DRC last conducted a national census in 1984, leaving decades of demographic data largely estimated and hampering effective public service delivery and development planning.
