The sharp increase is driven by the war in the Middle East and disruptions to supplies through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the main routes for global oil and gas trade. Any restrictions or risks in this region immediately affect fuel and shipping costs.

The rise in fuel oil prices directly increases maritime shipping costs, which are eventually passed on to the prices of all goods, from electronics to food. This is essentially inflation that “sails” across the sea.
