The Kremlin is tightening control ahead of a possible conflict with NATO, according to the Institute for the Study of War, citing internet shutdowns in Russia.

Internet access is already being restricted even for Russian officials, the report says. Internet and mobile communications have been unavailable for several days, including in the State Duma, with authorities citing “national security concerns.”

However, ISW believes the Kremlin may be preparing to further tighten control over the Russian internet, including in the context of a possible future conflict with NATO.

Russia has already blocked WhatsApp, other Western social networks, and services used to bypass restrictions. Pressure is also increasing on Telegram, which may become inaccessible even when using a VPN.
