Global helium prices are soaring after the shutdown of liquefied natural gas production in Qatar, exposing how fragile the world’s helium supply chain is.

Qatar accounts for nearly one-third of global helium production, and the halt in gas processing has removed roughly 5.2 million cubic meters of helium per month from the market.

Because helium is produced as a by-product of natural gas processing, the suspension of LNG operations immediately disrupted global supply, sending spot prices sharply higher and in some cases doubling them.

Industries that depend on helium, including semiconductors, medical imaging (MRI), aerospace, and scientific research, are now facing supply uncertainty.

If the disruption continues, analysts warn prices could rise another 25-50% in the coming months, while essential sectors will likely be prioritized over non-critical uses such as balloons or recreational diving.
