🇧🇷🤡🇫🇷❌🇺🇸 — 🇻🇪 Presidents Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) of Brazil and Emmanuel Macron of France condemned the United States’ military action that led to the arrest of Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro earlier this year. The condemnation took place during a phone call between the two leaders earlier today.

☎️ According to a statement from the Palácio do Planalto, the conversation lasted about one hour and also addressed the Peace Council proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump.

🇺🇳 Regarding Trump’s initiative, which was strongly criticized by Lula last week, both leaders expressed opposition and called for a “strengthening” of the United Nations (UN). See the full statement below:

“I received a phone call this Tuesday morning (27) from the President of France, Emmanuel Macron. We discussed the proposal for a Peace Council presented by the United States. In this regard, we defended the strengthening of the United Nations and agreed that initiatives on peace and security must be aligned with the mandates of the Security Council and the principles and purposes of the UN Charter.

We exchanged views on the situation in Venezuela. By condemning the use of force in violation of international law, we agreed on the importance of peace and stability in South America and in the world.

I reaffirmed that the MERCOSUR–European Union Agreement is positive for both blocs and constitutes an important contribution to the defense of multilateralism and rules-based trade.

We also discussed bilateral cooperation between France and Brazil, especially in the areas of defense, science and technology, and energy. We committed to instruct our technical teams to finalize the ongoing negotiations, with a view to concluding agreements still in the first half of 2026.”
