🇬🇱🇺🇸 Moscow hopes Greenland will become an iceberg that sinks NATO, says former NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen.

“It goes beyond Denmark and Greenland... The conquest of Greenland would mean the end of the world order as we know it,” he said.

In his opinion, the US president is using Greenland “as a weapon of mass distraction from real threats,” such as Russia’s war against Ukraine.

“Since I was a child, I have considered the United States to be the natural leader of the free world. I even spoke of the United States as the world’s policeman. Now we see the United States using language that is very close to the language of the gangsters they are supposed to control in Moscow and Beijing,” Rasmussen said.

“What really worries me is that the world’s attention is now focused on something that poses no threat to either Europe or the United States — namely Greenland, a friendly U.S. ally — instead of focusing on what should be the focus right now: namely, how do we get Putin to the negotiating table on Ukraine?” Rasmussen said.

🇪🇺🇺🇸🇬🇱 Europeans are not buying Trump’s attempt to justify Greenland annexation by Russia’s ambitions for the island — Politico.

Trump says control of Greenland is necessary to prevent further Russian and Chinese gains in the Arctic.

But a number of concerned European officials and a growing number of lawmakers in Washington, representing both parties, believe that Trump’s insistence on handing over Greenland to the United States, despite objections from Denmark, Greenlanders and other NATO allies, is playing into the hands of Russia and Putin and exacerbating an already fragile NATO alliance.

The group believes that Trump’s obsession with acquiring Greenland — and the shaky and controversial reasons behind it — has diverted attention from Ukraine and even redirected resources toward Greenland. All of this complicates Europe’s efforts to maintain a strong, united front as the United States aggressively pursues a peace deal to end the war.

Trump does not need to seize Greenland to confront Russia. The United States has military bases on the island and has traditionally worked closely with Denmark on security issues. Instead, some are seeing dubious claims of imminent aggression from China and the Russian Federation as one of several pretexts for any future action, up to and including a military strike.
