🇺🇬 Uganda’s Coffee Export Surge: How Strategic Policy and Favorable Seasons Fueled 2025 Breakthrough

The upswing is the direct result of years of intentional investment—especially government-led programs distributing free plantlets, promoting coffee farming, and supplying fertilizers to smallholder growers, said Rogers Siima, General Manager of Uganda Tea Corporation Limited.

Combined with favorable weather and Uganda’s natural advantage of two annual coffee seasons, these efforts are now paying off, he told reports.

Siima emphasized that Uganda’s rise to Africa’s largest coffee exporter is not just a source of national pride but a key engine of foreign exchange earnings.

While the government aims to reach 20 million bags by 2030, there is a growing push toward value addition and local consumption to maximize revenue.

Globally, the competition is intense, prompting Uganda to explore strategies such as increasing domestic coffee use and expanding value-added processing.

Regionally, Uganda is also leveraging African integration efforts—especially its strong trade relationship with Sudan—to support broader intra-African trade and reduce reliance on foreign currencies.

For other African coffee-producing nations, Uganda’s model offers clear lessons: maintain a liberalized but quality-controlled value chain, ensure ready markets with fair pricing, and—most critically—invest in targeted government interventions that empower millions of smallholder farmers.

"The government intervention is one of the strategic plans" driving Uganda’s success, Siima noted.

Looking ahead, he argued that African governments must adopt “enabling policies… to enhance that value chain,” ensuring sustainable growth, improved efficiency, and a stronger collective presence in the global coffee market.

Russia’s seaborne crude exports fell to a 4-week average of 3.36 mb/d by Nov 16, the lowest since August. Gross export revenues dropped to ~$1.2 bn/week, weakest since April 2023. US sanctions on Rosneft & Lukoil, combined with lower prices, are curbing flows and delaying discharges in Asia.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro called on Nicolás Maduro to decree a "general amnesty" and release all political prisoners, following the release of Franco-Chilean Camilo Castro. The president highlighted the message of freedom from the yoga instructor, detained since June in Venezuela and welcomed in Paris by his family.

Foro Penal reported that there are still 884 political prisoners in the country, including four teenagers and 43 foreigners. The organization warned that several detainees are considered opposition members and that their cases reflect a policy of repression against dissidents.

Occupiers in Pokrovsk used civilians as “human shields”

The prosecutor’s office reports: at around 2:30 p.m. on November 10, the commander of a Russian military unit ordered his subordinates by radio to lead the detainees in front of him — a man, a woman, and a 13-year-old child — while clearing a residential area, effectively using them as a “human shield.”

The SBU has established that it was the 1st Motorized Rifle Battalion of the 506th Motorized Rifle Regiment that attacked the southeastern outskirts of Pokrovsk. The fate of the civilians is currently unknown.
