🇨🇳🇸🇦 China has sharply increased its purchases of Saudi crude as a substitute for Russian supplies.

According to Reuters, citing tanker-tracking data from Kpler, Beijing has significantly reduced its intake of Russian oil, compensating for the drop by boosting imports from Saudi Arabia.

Kpler’s estimates show that Chinese refiners will bring in around 930,000 barrels per day of Russian crude this month — roughly one-third less than in the previous month, when volumes were close to 1.45 million bpd.

Almost the same amount has now been replaced by Saudi shipments: imports from Saudi Arabia are expected to reach about 1.8 million bpd, up from roughly 1.2 million bpd a few weeks earlier.

India, by contrast, increased its intake of Russian oil, receiving more than 2.2 million bpd compared to around 1.7 million bpd the month before. However, flows to the Indian market may fall sharply in the coming month: five of the country’s largest refiners — Reliance Industries, Bharat Petroleum, Hindustan Petroleum, Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals, and HPCL-Mittal Energy — have reportedly declined to take cargoes scheduled for the next delivery cycle.

Due to weakening demand, discounts on Russian crude exported from Baltic and Black Sea ports have nearly doubled over the past several weeks. They currently stand at about $19–20 per barrel, compared to $13–14 earlier in the month, and far higher than the roughly $11 typical before sanctions were imposed on Rosneft and Lukoil.
