As many probably know, public school attendance is down nationwide with many families choosing other options such as charter school, private/parochial school, or homeschool. My school made staff cuts at the end of last school year in anticipation for this year, but our numbers this year are even lower than that projection, so they are now making even more cuts.
I knew cuts and merges would be coming. Today I found out that I am absorbing another 6th grade math teacher’s classes, so I will go from 30 to 103 total students in five class periods.
While I’m relieved that I’m not being asked to change grade level, subject, or school, it’s unfortunate that my school and many around the country are not operating in a way that parents can trust to send their children. In the upcoming months and years, I’d like to see public schools like mine focus on pinpointing why parents who can swing it are choosing other educational arrangements for their children and then work to make changes to our program to better serve students and families.

Albuquerque Public Schools is offering a stipend to employees who attend Transgender Cultural Fluency Training. This class is being taught by Stacy Fatemi, a person who identifies as they/them/theirs.
Safe Zone
This is a recording of a recent “safe zone” training for Albuquerque Public Schools teachers. Some points to note include the presenter explaining that teachers are not to “out” a child to parents if the child comes out as LGBTQ+ to the teacher, and that students can use whatever restroom and locker room they prefer without any required documentation or parental notification.
This came up on Facebook Memories from one year ago today. The governor in question is Michelle Lujan-Grisham.
My school had been talking about volleyball tryouts during morning announcements for weeks. Kids were getting excited and knew they had to be passing all their classes to be eligible. And then today it was announced that volleyball is cancelled “per governor’s orders”. What we are doing to this generation of children is unbelievable, and I think we will see repercussions of this damage for decades to come.

ATTN ALBQ FOLKS: PLEASE ATTEND RALLY IN SUPPORT OF PARENTS RIGHTS BEFORE THE SCHOOL BOARD MEETING ON OCT 19 👇👇👇
APS is considering a new policy, KB1 - Parent Rights and Responsibilities, that would establish parents' rights to be informed about what is happening with their kids at school. THIS IS A GOOD POLICY WHICH WE NEED TO ENCOURAGE THE SCHOOL BOARD TO PASS. ATTEND THE RALLY AND SIGN UP (after 8am on Oct 19) TO GIVE PUBLIC COMMENT HERE: https://www.aps.edu/about-us/board/about-board-meetings-1/virtual-meeting-signup/
The progressives and trans activists around the state are calling on people all over the state to oppose this new policy. IT IS TIME TO STAND UP AND SHOW SUPPORT FOR PARENTS RIGHTS.
