🤔 Does any of you remember when was the last time that a traditional financial institution launched something revolutionary? Exactly, probably in the 20th century. Who knows how long this situation could last if blockchain technology didn’t emerge. Scared of losing control over money flow, the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT) finally announced it is working on an inflow translation service that will improve cross-border payments. Still, the question remains – can it compete with crypto?

🙊 In our opinion no, which is why an increasing number of companies start accepting payments in bitcoin. This week the international trading company Elektra, owned by Ricardo Salinas, one of the wealthiest men in Mexico, has announced a new agreement with BitPay.

🥇Talking about revolution, Robinhood announced it is launching a crypto gifting feature, which will allow users to send crypto to friends and family via the trading app starting Dec. 22. On top of that, cryptocurrency lender Nexo has teamed up with crypto hedge fund Three Arrows Capital to launch an NFT-backed lending service. The platform will initially accept Bored Apes and Cryptopunks NFTs, before adding more items continuously.

🎅 The Christmas holidays are around the corner meaning it is time to look back and balance all the craziness that took place in 2021. First thing first, hardly anyone can disagree with the fact that it was the year of NFTs — according to the DappRadar Industry Report, over the past 12 months non-fungible token trading volume surpassed $23 billion.

😄 Decentralized finance also didn’t disappoint — the total value locked in DeFi protocols grew by more than 700% from 2020, surpassing $200 billion this year. It is worth mentioning that even though Ethereum remains the leading DeFi blockchain, new alternatives continue to emerge. Who knows, maybe one day it will become intertwined with traditional financial system. The good news is that a DeFi world in which counterparties interact directly via smart contracts would be more efficient and fair.

In terms of traditional cryptocurrencies, eight years after the first application for a Bitcoin exchange-traded fund was filed by the Winklevoss brothers, the first Bitcoin ETF in the United States began trading at the New York Stock Exchange. The new product allows trading through regular investment accounts, bypassing the hassle and security concerns of cryptocurrency exchanges.

🥽  Finally, yet importantly, the digital industry has been disrupted by the Metaverse space. David Palmer, blockchain lead at Vodafone Business, mentioned that in his opinion the Metaverse is much more than a virtual world where digital experiences via games or social media networks can take place. Overall, we are pleased to see that an increasing number of companies are beginning to develop and leverage business models in the recently born space, meaning the technology could hamper fast adoption.

What better way to begin 2022 than to learn another essential DeFi term.

Today, on the Nimbus Glossary, we present the term - ✨Burn✨

Token Burn has become an industry-wide practice - mostly for keeping the charts on the uptrend while also ensuring a strongly incentivized community. 
Here are some more interesting facts:

✔️There are several methods employed to execute token burning in DeFi. However, the most common method is to send a specific number of tokens/coins to a so-called “eater address.”  It’s an address that is not recognized by the Blockchain or loses its private key, meaning once tokens go there, they cannot be ever redeemed. The real-time balance of such address can be viewed publicly, but the contents within the address, a.k.a the tokens sent for burning, cannot be accessed by anyone for perpetuity.

✔️Nimbus n-NFT can also be burned but the nature of burning is different. There was no intention to use the burn to affect the n-NFT market value. Instead, the burning of such n-NFT is simply a way to redeem the assets that are backing your n-NFT. Thanks to this, the n-NFT holders don’t have the usual pain that other NFT holders do. You do not need to search for buyers in order to “cash out”. All you have to do is just burn your n-NFT and receive your assets at a click of a button.
