On May 21, a Singapore Airlines flight encountered unexpected and intense turbulence over Myanmar. This incident resulted in the death of one passenger and injuries to more than 70 passengers and crew.
Impact of Climate Change
Research indicates that climate change may increase the frequency and severity of turbulence.
A study published last year by researchers from the University of Reading and the UK Meteorological Office found a significant rise in clear-air turbulence (CAT) between 1979 & 2020 at mid- and high-altitude flight levels.
Current Measures
In response to the May 21 incident, Singapore Airlines announced that meal services would be halted during turbulence, and cabin crew would remain seated with seat belts fastened during these times.
Conclusion
Serious injuries often result from passengers being thrown from their seats during turbulence, and the best way to prevent this is by remaining strapped in even when the seat belt sign is off.
