Let’s Make Their New Year Brighter

Every September, I raise funds to support children who struggle to afford basic educational needs. This year, we’re taking it further by supporting Zewditu Orphanage Center, which I had the chance to visit a few months ago.

They’re well cared for, but holidays are still difficult. especially when it comes to making the kids feel happy and celebrated.

So, throughout Pagume, let’s give what we can. 80 birr can feed one child for a day. But even 10 birr matters.

Let’s put a smile on a child’s face this New Year. Let humanity be our New Year’s gift.

2018 is ending tonight, so I wrote down what happened.

A year ago Kenat was one npm package I built because a project of mine needed Ethiopian dates and nothing out there worked. Today it is a calendar engine in five languages (JS/TS, Python, Dart, PHP, Java), an Android app on Google Play, a headless UI kit, a CLI, and a Chrome + Firefox extension.

I couldn't read this post. cause i was busy helping my sister whole day.

This is one of the reasons I love open source stuff..
You build something, contribute a small piece, and eventually see that piece become part of a bigger ecosystem.

Kenat/ቀናት is becoming a serious open source toolkit for developers who need Ethiopian calendar functionality at all.

My contributions to Kenat includes a Java 21+ gradle package and a small Ethiopian calendar date-picker lib for shadcn users.

Today, The new Kenat blog post mentions them, and honestly, that recognition is a huge motivation to keep building.

I almost lost everything this year.

Not “stressed about deadlines” losing everything.

My dad. My family. Everything I’ve been building.

There were nights I genuinely didn’t know if RAVN would survive the month.

But my cofounder and I kept building anyway. Through the doubt, uncertainty, and nights when nothing seemed to work.

To everyone who watched us build this from the beginning, thank you. This wasn’t luck or a guarantee. We kept building long before there was anything to celebrate.

This bird has been pecking at the window for the past six days, and honestly, I’m getting stressed too. 😭 I don’t know how to help her. I can’t open the window, and I can’t go outside.
I think she’s seeing her own reflection and thinks it’s another bird. She keeps flying up and then coming back down again and again. I really didn’t know what to do. 😭

Finally, I came up with an idea. I simply turned on my flashlight and pointed it toward the window. It creates enough light to match the light outside, so she can no longer see her reflection. I think it’s working for now. 😁
