Midnight Grand is a stunning concert grand piano, expertly recorded in a concert hall with a layer of cotton between the hammers and strings, to create a delicate, cinematic tone.
This is not 'just another sampled Steinway' - it is a carefully crafted virtual piano full of nuance and character, perfect for intimate drama and rich cinematic passages alike.
As with all our products, Midnight Grand was developed with ease of use in mind, so you can jump straight in and start writing music. We are confident it will become a staple in many composers' sample collections.
The instrument was recorded in a modern concert hall environment using a selection of top-shelf microphones (from DPA, Coles, AKG) placed close to the piano and further back in the room. We carefully blended these microphone signals into a single stereo mix. The result is a well balanced and versatile sound - spacious enough so as not to sound boxy or claustrophobic, yet dry enough to offer the flexibility of adding as much or little reverb as you like.
We recorded true pedal up and down samples, for authentic sympathetic resonance when the sustain pedal is held down. Some of our beta testers loved the sound of the pedal down samples so much that we decided to include an additional patch, 'Midnight Piano (Alt).nki' which uses only these samples. This patch has a rich, full sound even when the sustain pedal isn't engaged.
Mechanical Sounds and Room Tone
With Midnight Grand, we went far beyond sampling the notes themselves. Our sonic vision for this library was for it to sound like you are sat at the piano, capturing the feeling of being alone in an empty room with nothing but the piano in front of you. A huge part of achieving this (aside from the microphone placement) was capturing the mechanical sounds of the piano - the sound of the hammers returning to their resting position when a key is released, and the sound of the dampers lifting when the pedal is pressed. Both of these sounds can be dialled in to your taste, for enhanced realism.
The Room Tone control adds the natural sound of the air moving around the hall, as well as subtle creaks and clicks. When used sparingly, the room tone can really bring the samples to life, giving the impression the performance is taking place in a real acoustic space.
Atmosphere Layers
Once again, we have brought back our popular 'Atmosphere Layers' - playable pads and textures which blend together with the raw piano beautifully.
The 'Haze' layer adds a smooth, dreamy sustain.
The 'Shivers' layer is a textural pad, created from processed live string recordings.
The 'Eclipse' layer is a rich reversed granular delay effect, which lingers behind the raw piano.
These layers can be dialled in to taste using the Layer Mixer. Additionally, the global 'intensity' of these layers can be controlled using the 'Atmosphere Intensity' dial, or automated in real-time using the mod wheel.

Woodchester Piano is the first in our new series of collaborations with talented composers and artists, bringing you a range of finely crafted virtual instruments full of personality. This library was produced in close collaboration with film and TV composer James Everingham, and features his Wilh. Steinberg German Series upright piano, intimately recorded with the felt pedal engaged.
We visited James's studio and spent several days carefully sampling every nuance of the instrument. We then spent many months mixing, polishing and fine-tuning the instrument, resulting in a stunning virtual piano with a beautifully versatile sound, which is a joy to play.
Woodchester Piano also includes key release and pedal samples, a unique pianist noise feature to add subtle rustling and wood creaks for heightened realism, and adjustable colour control to dial in the perfect tone for your composition.

After the success of our Dream Zither and Tiny Music Box libraries, we decided to take our tried and tested 'playable pad' concept to the next level, offering three atmospheric sound design layers which blend together with the raw piano beautifully.

MELODICS – COMBOS & SOLOISTS
The concept for Palette – Melodics is simple. We studied the scores of several of our favorite classical and modern film music composers (which was a most enjoyable exercise!) and selected 18 of the most evocative melody-carrying combinations and instruments. We recorded a soaring violin section playing octaves, regal trumpets with horns, playful flutes & piccolo, creepy bass clarinet & contrabassoon octaves, a gigantic and downright frightening low strings & low brass ensemble and many others. We felt it was also important to include soloists since they are so often used to deliver a melody, so we recorded 6 of those as well. 17 of the 18 instruments in the library have true legato (the exception being our Trombones & Tuba).
You are not, however, limited to using “Melodics” for melodies. The instruments feature up to 12 common articulations (most include 4 different kinds of short notes!) and can therefore also be used for traditional orchestral writing to add unique colors to your compositions.
Our soloists were recorded in standard orchestral seating position with 3 microphone perspectives – close, decca tree and hall. For the combos we added a second close mic (4 total mics) so you have some control of each individual instrument. The room is spacious but fairly dry, with only a 1.2 second tail, which allows for easy blending with other libraries using your favorite reverbs, so you’re not limited to the sound of one particular hall. Since “Palette – Melodics” was recorded by the same amazing musicians and production team with the same equipment and in the same hall, it was designed to blend perfectly with all the other Palette libraries.

Palette is a series of thematic professional orchestral and cinematic Kontakt virtual instruments for songwriters and media composers. It was recorded in a dedicated hall with world-renowned performers by a passionate and experienced team of sample makers. It was a dream come true for us to make and we hope this expansive set of scoring tools inspires you to write some great music.
There’s an awful lot of content here, so to make things more accessible we divided it into multiple products. The first is “Palette – Symphonic Sketchpad,” which contains the building blocks to quickly and easily bring your cinematic ideas to life. Then, to add detail and color to your compositions we’ve put together additional tool sets we call “Brush Packs.” These brush packs do not require that you own Symphonic Sketchpad, but focus on deeper and more specific scoring elements like orchestral FX, percussion loops or true-legato melodic ensembles. This modular approach allows you the opportunity to pick up the tools you want and not the ones you don’t. Since all Palette instruments were recorded in the same hall by the same production team and the same musicians, they complement each other perfectly.
RUNS & ARPS
“Palette – Runs & Arps” is the most in-depth virtual instrument for real recorded (not scripted) orchestral scales and arpeggios ever assembled. We felt there was simply no better way to capture the emotion and subtle nuances of these unique articulations than to record them in their entirety, versus trying to cleverly combine samples to produce artificial phrases. Therefore we went the extra mile and recorded both strings and woodwinds ensembles playing scales in 6 primary modes – Major, Natural Minor, Harmonic Minor, Melodic Minor, Whole Tone and Chromatic – each with up to 13 variations. There are also 20 kinds of arpeggios in 4 modes – Major, Minor, Diminished and Augmented. Every run/arp has 2 round robins and can be performed in every key and can sync to your host’s tempo. In total, “Palette – Runs & Arps” includes over 1600 performances!
The modern and easy-to-use GUI always displays the notation for the current run/arp so you can visualize exactly what the orchestra is doing. For composers creating mockups who plan to deliver finished scores to an orchestra, we’ve also included the ability to drag and drop MIDI data for every performance to your DAW. You could also use this to easily layer the performances with other samples. We’ve added several convenient Settings features like Downbeat Sync, which ensures that the final note of the performance always lands on count 1 of the next measure. Tempo controls allow you to sync to your host tempo or set the BPM manually. The “In Quantize” knob quantizes the start of the performance to the note value of your choice. There’s also a powerful 8-slot FX rack where you can select from 19 high quality FX.
As with the entire Palette line, our players were recorded in standard orchestral seating position with 3 microphone perspectives – close, decca tree and hall. The room is spacious but fairly dry, with only a 1.2 second tail, which allows for easy blending with other libraries using your favorite reverbs, so you’re not limited to the sound of one particular hall. Since “Palette – Runs & Arps” was recorded by the same amazing musicians and production team with the same equipment and in the same hall, it was designed to blend perfectly with all the other Palette libraries.

We recorded 3 dynamic layers and up to 7 round robins and to give you even more flexibility we recorded everything in 2 different ensemble sizes (chamber and full) so you can go epic or go intimate.

All performances are wrapped together in a brandnew NI Kontakt based engine allowing the user to freely map all phrases and musical parts of phrases to their liking, thus creating new combinations beyond the well known layouts.
