Art in Permacrisis #8: Vermeir & Heiremans between Speculative Fiction and Operational Realism

Vermeir & Heiremans started their collaborative artistic practice in 2006, when they defined their apartment in Brussels as an artwork and created the Art House Index. In the following decades, they developed a deep artistic research practice focusing on the interplay between art, speculation, finance, and real estate. We cover a lot of ground in our conversation, from financialisation for the public good to automated art dividends, real estate speculation, bottom-up policymaking, new ways of mutualization, and the lure of art cooperatives.

UCLA design theorist Peter Lunenfeld's letter to all @ INC entitled The Triumph of the Feels in the Age of Celebrity Governance: "Trump intuits rather than cogitates, but in this he exhibits what Aldous Huxley identified decades ago as post-verbal knowing. His MAGA movement runs on the “feels.” It’s hard to tell how much this aspect of the American experience right now is exceptional, but in this country celebrity has replaced charisma as the central magic of totalitarianism. 29 March, 15:00 @ Ventilator Cinema / OT301

The Amsterdam Free Space Festival presents the Dutch premier of Capital B: Who Owns Berlin? (German with English subtitles), a truly mind-blowing docu-series on the relation between culture, real estate and politics in Berlin after the fall of the wall.

Guests include Capital B director Florian Opitz and Johnny Stieler (founder of Club Tresor) to discuss how activists, artists and cultural producers influence the development of their cities. Also joining the discussion will be Andreas Krüger, moderator of Berlin’s Roundtable on Municipal Real Estate.
