Losing a job is never easy, and in a new country like Finland, it can feel even more overwhelming. That’s why we put together a practical guide on what to do if you face a layoff here.

Here’s a quick look at what we cover:

🔹 Unemployment benefits — how to register, what’s the difference (or lack of it) between lomautus and termination, and how to make sure you start receiving support.
🔹 Residence permit rules — including Finland’s “six-month rule” and other options, like applying through family ties.
🔹 Real experiences — for example, one case where a person thought he might lose his status, but thanks to timely action ended up holding two valid permits at once.
🔹 Why staying in touch matters — from Migri to unions to local networks, responding and reaching out can change the outcome.

👉 Even if things look uncertain, there are always steps you can take — and often more solutions than you might expect.

How not to lose your Finnish residence permit when you spend part of the year abroad

Sometimes you just need a change of scenery, for example, spending a couple of months by the ocean in Portugal, without giving up your job or ties to Finland. The good news: with an EOR (Employer of Record) model, that’s absolutely possible.

We have EOR-members who spend part of the year in the south and then return to Finland. The key is to understand how your Finnish residence status works while you’re away.

🔘 If you have a Permanent Residence Permit (P-RP)

You can live and work in another EU country for up to 6 years without losing your Finnish permanent residence.

If you move outside the EU, the period shortens to 2 years.

👉 Keep in mind: if you live outside Finland for more than six months, your tax residency may shift to another country, and you might need to start paying taxes there. It’s a good idea to check local tax rules in advance and see whether there’s a double taxation treaty in place.

🔘 If you have a Temporary Residence Permit (RP)

This one’s trickier. To keep your Finnish RP valid, you need to maintain strong ties to Finland, for example:
• remaining a Finnish tax resident,
• continuing to pay taxes here,
• keeping a registered address or family in Finland.

If you spend more than six consecutive months outside Finland, there’s a real risk that your RP might not be renewed later.
Also, if you plan to stay in another country (even within the Schengen area) longer than the standard visa-free period, make sure to apply for the right local permit, visa, or registration. Each country has its own rules.

Soon, Finland will enter its darkest and most melancholic time of the year. Finns often joke that “marraskuu” (November) isn’t just a month, it’s a state of mind 😅

So yes, we totally get the temptation to work with a Mediterranean view!

Just make sure to check the local rules and tax arrangements in advance, and then enjoy your time away with peace of mind 🌍
