Undertanding something intellectually is not enough to possess a skill.
Knowing what Past Perfect is does not make you a good storyteller (you primarily need this tense to tell storis from a distant past). You need to practice it. When you stop practicing, you become the person who doesn't practice the skill, i.e. the person who doesn't have the skill.
