The Political Affairs Officer Sonia Sigmund identified the main causes of political instability and security in Libya during a panel discussion on International Womenโ€™s Day.

๐Ÿฅ”๐Ÿฅ”๐Ÿฅ”๐Ÿฅ”๐Ÿฅ”๐Ÿฅ”๐Ÿฅ”

Sigmund said that unequal access to Libyaโ€™s wealth, lack of transparency and accountability in its management, and limited socio-economic prospects, especially for Libyan women and youth, are strong drivers of political instability and insecurity in Libya.

โ€œSystematic discrimination against women, unequal opportunities, and limited access to resources not only hinder individuals from realizing their potential, but also the overall prosperity and resilience of Libyan society,โ€ Sigmund said.

Financial markets are witnessing continuous turmoil against the backdrop of the Iranian attack on Israel, and the possibility of the latterโ€™s response, amid expectations of a rise in oil prices in the trading session tomorrow, Monday.

The evolution of prices depends on the shape of the response taken by Israel and Western powers, as concerns have contributed to pushing oil prices to their highest levels since last October.

The price of benchmark Brent crude closed on Friday at $92.18 a barrel, and West Texas Intermediate crude futures closed at $85.66 a barrel, recording a rise of 64 cents.

Tamas Varga, an analyst at oil brokerage BVM, confirmed the possibility of a rise in oil prices when trading resumes, noting that the hikes will be temporary unless oil supplies from the region are permanently affected.

Reuters reported that Somali pirates released the hijacked ship โ€œAbdullahโ€ and its crew of 23 members after a ransom of $5 million was paid.

One of the pirates, Abdul Rashid Yusuf, told the agency that they received the money two nights ago as usual, then validated and divided the funds, before releasing the ship and its entire crew on Sunday, avoiding government forces.

Somali government officials did not respond to requests for comment.

The Bangladeshi-flagged bulk ship was hijacked in March while on its voyage from Mozambique to the United Arab Emirates, about 600 nautical miles east of the Somali capital Mogadishu.

Waters off the Somali coast were in chaos between 2008 and 2018 due to pirate activity, and things remained calm until the end of last year, when pirate activity began to rise again.

The Directorate General of Meteorology in Morocco predicted that several regions will witness a heat wave accompanied by strong wind gusts, starting from Thursday until next Monday.

Temperatures are expected to rise to levels about nine degrees above annual averages in some areas.

The communications officer at the Directorate General of Meteorology, Hussein Youabed, stated that the expected rise in temperatures is due to the concentration of an air rise in the western Mediterranean, which leads to directing eastern winds towards the interior regions of the Kingdom, bringing with it hot and dry air masses from the Sahara desert.

Morocco is witnessing a deterioration in the water situation and an exacerbation of drought, as many areas suffer from shortages of fresh water and irrigation, which makes the agricultural and economic conditions of citizens more difficult.

The Russian Foreign Ministry called on the parties involved in the Middle East to exercise restraint, citing Moscowโ€™s warnings that failure to resolve crises in the region, particularly the war in Gaza, would inflame the situation.

โ€œWe express our deep concern about any further dangerous escalation in the region and have repeatedly warned that the failure to resolve crises in the Middle East, especially the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, will lead to increased tension,โ€ the Russian Foreign Ministry statement said.

โ€œGiven the position of Western members, the UN Security Council has not been able to respond appropriately to the attack on the Iranian consulate, and we express our grave concern about any further dangerous escalation in the region,โ€ the ministry added.

Egyptโ€™s Environmental Affairs Agency chief executive Ali Abu Sunna said Sunday that a state of emergency has been imposed in the Gulf of Aqaba region in anticipation of any leakage from a stranded gas vessel.

The Egyptian authoritiesโ€™ statement did not specify the exact date of the incident or whether it was still ongoing.

In the same context, two sources from nature reserves in the southern Egyptian Sinai Peninsula told AFP that a Liberian-flagged natural gas tanker ran aground in the Gulf of Aqaba on Friday and was taken away.

One of the sources said the ship was taken to the port of Sharm el-Sheikh. They stated that the tanker was empty and suffered an engine failure.

The Egyptian Environment Ministry also said Sunday that an environmental emergency had been imposed in the South Sinai region in anticipation of any pollution or leakage from the stranded vessel.

The Moroccan navy says 118 irregular migrants have been rescued off the countryโ€™s Atlantic coast.

The Royal Moroccan Armed Forces (Army) said on its Facebook account that a Royal Navy unit was able, on Sunday morning, to rescue 118 irregular migrants, including 9 women and 3 minors.
