Carl Spitzweg, 1845.

The image of the raven became especially popular in the first half of the 19th century thanks to the poetics of German Romanticism. Everyone knows the Romantics' love for the mysterious, frightening secret forces of black magic, which have since captivated the imagination of enlightened Europeans.
