India’s Reusable Launch Vehicle (RLV): Everything you need to know
India successfully tested the launched of indigenously made Reusable Launch Vehicle (RLV), capable of launching satellites into orbit around earth and then re-enter the atmosphere, from Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh. RLV is dubbed as India’s own space shuttle. (The ‘Space Shuttle’ was a partially reusable low Earth orbital spacecraft system operated by the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), as part of the Space Shuttle program.)
What’s the significance of Reusable Launch Vehicle (RLV)?
Reusable Launch Vehicle (RLV)
RLV is the unanimous solution to achieve low cost, reliable and on—demand space access.
The making of the Indian space shuttle or RLV-TD has taken five years and the government has invested Rs. 95 crore in the project.
This flight will test the capability of the vehicle to survive a re-entry at speeds higher than that of sound.
The solution to reducing cost of launching satellites into orbit is to recycle the rocket or make it reusable.
Scientists at ISRO believe that they could reduce the cost by as much as 10 times if reusable technology succeeds, bringing it down to $2,000 per kg from the present $20,000 per kg.
What about NASA’s space shuttle programme?
Nasa grounded its space shuttle programme in 2011 after using its reusable vehicles like Discovery, Endeavor, Columbia and Challenger for over three decades to launch various missions, including the International Space Station (ISS) and the Hubble telescope.
Everything you need to know about India’s Reusable Launch Vehicle (RLV) and Hypersonic flight experiment
Scientists at ISRO tested the RLV Technology Demonstrator (TD), in the first experiment of its kind known as Known as hypersonic flight experiment. It was about 10 minutes mission from liftoff to splashdown. The purpose of the experiment is to help the shuttle glide over a virtual runway in the Bay of Bengal, situated 500 km from the coast.
The RLV-TD is unlikely to be recovered from sea (Bay of Bengal) during this experiment as it is expected that the vehicle will disintegrate on impact with water since it is not designed to float.
The 6.5 meter long Re-usable Launch Vehicle – Technology Demonstrator (RLV-TD) weighed about 1.7 tons.
The special booster or the first stage is powered using a solid fuel that hoist the RLV-TD prototype to about 70 km into the atmosphere from where the descent began. During the descent phase, small thrusters helped the vehicle navigate itself to the landing area. The final version will take at least 10-15 years to get ready.

'ADITYA-1' is a proposal for the first Indian
space based solar coronagraph intended to
study the outermost region of the sun, called
corona. The temperature of the solar corona
goes beyond million degrees. From the
ground, the corona could be seen only during
total solar eclipses mainly due to the bright
solar disc and the scattering of the sunlight
by the Earth’s atmosphere. To mask the
bright solar disc and study the corona, one
has to go beyond the atmosphere.
The major scientific objectives of Aditya-1
mission are to achieve a fundamental
understanding of the physical processes that
heat the solar corona; accelerate the solar
wind; and produce coronal mass ejections
(CMEs). The ambitious solar mission will
study the sun's outer most layers, the corona
and the chromosphere, collect data about
coronal mass ejection and more, which will
also yield information for space weather
prediction.
The project costs approximately Rs 400
crores and is a joint venture between ISRO
and physicists from Indian Institute of
Astrophysics, Bengaluru; Inter University
Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics,
Pune; Tata Institute of Fundamental
Research, Mumbai, and other institutes.
A halo orbit would be a circular orbit around
the L1 point. The satellite will have to use its
own power (spend energy) to remain in
position within in this orbit without losing its
way. Such orbits have not been attempted
too often.
In December 2015, the Government has
made clear that: India will launch
Chandrayan-II in 2017 and its first Solar
Mission Aditya L1 in around 2019.

It is often forgotten that globalization, is not only about policies on international economic relationships and transactions, but has equally to do with domestic policies of a nation. Policy changes necessitated by meeting the internationally set conditions (by WTO etc.) of free trade and investment flows obviously affect domestic producers and investors. But the basic philosophy underlying globalization emphasizes absolute freedom to markets to determine prices and production and distribution patterns, and view government interventions as processes that create distortions and bring in inefficiency. Thus, public enterprises have to be privatized through disinvestments and sales; sectors and activities hitherto reserved for the public sector have to be opened to the private sector. This logic extends to the social services like education and health. Any restrictions on the adjustments in workforce by way of retrenchment of workers should also be removed and exit should be made easier by removing any restrictions on closures. Employment and wages should be governed by free play of market forces, as any measure to regulate them can discourage investment and also create inefficiency in production. Above all, in line with the overall philosophy of reduction in the role of the state, fiscal reforms (b) optimum use of resources. should be undertaken to have generally low levels of taxation and government expenditure should be kept to the minimum to abide by the principle of fiscal prudence. All these are policy actions on the domestic front and are not directly related to the core items of the globalization agenda, namely free international flow of goods and finance.

The summer heat is increasing day by day. We were hoping for some respite, instead we are experiencing continual rise in temperature. And in the midst of this came the information that the monsoon will perhaps be delayed by a week, which has added to the worry. Almost the entire country is reeling under the scorching impact of severe heat. The mercury continues to soar. Be it animals, birds or humans…everyone is suffering. These problems have been getting increasingly worse due to environmental degradation. Forest cover has kept receding due to indiscriminate felling of trees. In a way, the human race itself has paved the way for self-annihilation by destroying the environment.
5th June is World Environment Day. On this day, discussions expressing concern on the issue are held all over the world for saving the environment. This time on the occasion of World Environment Day, the United Nations has given the theme “Zero Tolerance for Illegal Wildlife Trade”. This topic will, of course, be discussed, but we also must talk about saving our flora and fauna, conserving water, and how to expand our forest cover. You must have seen in the last few days how forest fires raged in the lap of the Himalayas in Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. The main cause of these forest fires was dry leaf littering combined with carelessness, which led to the massive inferno. And so, it becomes the bounden duty of each one of us, to save forests and save water.
