πŸ”† Exercise Pitch Black 2026

πŸ“ Why in Focus?
βœ… The Indian Air Force (IAF) is participating in Exercise Pitch Black 2026 at RAAF Base Darwin, Australia, from 20 July to 7 August 2026.

πŸ“ Key Facts
βœ… It is the Royal Australian Air Force’s (RAAF) premier biennial multinational air combat exercise.
βœ… The exercise derives its name from its emphasis on night flying over the vast, sparsely populated areas of northern Australia.
βœ… The 2026 edition involves Large Force Employment and complex multinational air combat operations.

πŸ“ India’s Participation
βœ… IAF is operating Rafale multirole fighter aircraft.
βœ… C-17 Globemaster III and IL-78 air-to-air refuelling aircraft are providing combat support.
βœ… India previously participated in the 2018, 2022 and 2024 editions.

πŸ“ Significance
βœ… Enhances multinational interoperability and force integration.
βœ… Validates expeditionary air operations over extended distances.
βœ… Strengthens defence partnerships and operational cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.

πŸ”† PRAXIS Mission: NASA’s AI-Powered Exploration of Planetary Rings

πŸ“ Why in Focus?
NASA has selected PRAXIS (Planetary Rings Autonomous EXploration with In-situ Sampling) under the NASA Innovative Advanced Concepts (NIAC) 2026 Phase-I programme to develop a novel mission for directly sampling particles from planetary rings.

πŸ“ Key Highlights:
βœ… PRAXIS is a bio-inspired robotic explorer powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI) for in-situ sampling of planetary ring particles.
βœ… Instead of flying through dense rings, the spacecraft will graze the ring plane and perform touch-and-go sampling using a long deployable boom, reducing collision risks.
βœ… The mission aims to study the formation, evolution, composition, particle size, porosity, and structure of planetary rings.
βœ… Small onboard instruments will collect free-floating particles, while AI will analyse particle size, porosity, and composition.
βœ… If Phase-I studies succeed, the mission could advance to prototype development and eventually support exploration of ringed planets such as Saturn, Jupiter, Uranus, and Neptune.

πŸ“ Challenges / Issues / Implications:
βœ… Sampling fast-moving ring particles without damaging the spacecraft is technologically challenging.
βœ… Mission success depends on advanced AI-driven autonomous navigation and precision control.
βœ… Findings could significantly improve understanding of planetary formation and Solar System evolution.

βœ… Mains Question:
Discuss the significance of AI-enabled deep space missions such as NASA’s PRAXIS in advancing planetary science. What technological challenges are associated with in-situ exploration of planetary ring systems? (250 Words)
