Money quote: "Open Law Library’s mission as a nonprofit is to make all laws as open and accessible as possible. The library’s strategy is to achieve openness by making openness pay off for governments: it uses open, machine-readable laws to build software tools that make codification faster and more accurate. The cool thing about this is that governments can benefit from using Open Law Library’s software even if open data isn’t their highest priority, but in the background they’ll still be publishing their laws in an open and accessible format—everybody wins."

Money quote: "January 6, 1988, was one of those Wednesdays when the old baroque building in Kloster Strasse in East Berlin was teeming with activity. The building was called the "House of Young Talents" (HdjT) at the time, but today its original name, Palais Podewils, has been restored to honor its one-time owner, who was Friedrich the Great's foreign minister. That winter day, 70 to 80 people crowded into a first-floor room, normally the rehearsal space for a local children's choir. The computer club met there every Wednesday, a group of mostly young people, with the lion's share of them around 20 years old, but some as young as 16.

Similar clubs could be found across the German Democratic Republic (GDR) during the 1980s and there were around 20 in Berlin alone. But some of those attending this particular meeting at the HdjT had come from far away. And they had good reason. Because even though this was the "Central Clubhouse" of the communist youth organization FDJ, not a single one of the computers sitting on the tables had been manufactured in the GDR. They were all from the West."

Money quote: "Some courts mandate certain fonts, font-sizing, spacing, and margin size.

Let's hope the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania doesn't, because this complaint is a freaking work of art: font choices, formatting, bright red signature at the end -- it's all just so dang perfect. Take a look for yourself:"

Insomma, fantastico.

Money quote: "The large format portraits are of individuals who appear to be holding personal devices although the devices have been physically removed from the sitter’s hand. They are asked to hold their stare and posture as I remove their device and then I make the exposure. The photographs represent reenactments of scenes that I experience daily."

Money quote: "Quora has:

No public API.
No backup or export tools.
Restricted access to answers without an account.
Blocked scrapers and unofficial APIs, and deleted questions related to scraping on their site."

https://waxy.org/2018/12/why-you-should-never-ever-use-quora/

Money quote: "Today, I decided to self-publish a book in 3 months' time.

I am going to keep on writing all of my drafts every day in public. In the meantime I will develop new tools to allow anyone on this platform to recycle and edit their posts into actual ebooks, and self-publish them for a living. No code needed, the whole publishing process will be eased by the website.

I want 200 Words a Day to prove that it is not only possible for anyone to be a writer, but also to become an author."

Ci riusciranno i nostri eroi?

Money quote: "Some friends and I wanted to take a trip out of Venice right before Christmas. We did not want to do a single round trip, though - we wanted to do a multi leg journey. The problem with Ryanair’s site, however, is that it only lets you make a single round trip itinerary. This is great for round trip flights to a single destination, but means that it’s a significant amount of work to cross reference which city goes where. If my flight plan is Airport A -> Airport B -> Airport C -> Airport A there’s no way to check that B -> C -> A is a valid journey without checking both the B -> C segment and the C -> A segment."
