I had seen some videos made by "survivalist" about what they called a "Super Shelter" made with sticks and tarps and lined with those silver blankets. I could easily mock up an ultralight Bakers Tent out those cheap silver "emergency blankets". That would prove beyond any doubt rather they actually worked and if they did I could make a bigger tent that still weighed less than most other tents the same size. I had to find out if they did work."

Money quote: "Why are some people upset about these changes?
Before we get into the criticism, it’s worth saying: Apple has gotten praise for these updates from some privacy and security experts, including the prominent cryptographers and computer scientists Mihir Bellare, David Forsyth, and Dan Boneh. “This system will likely significantly increase the likelihood that people who own or traffic in [CSAM] are found,” said Forsyth in an endorsement provided by Apple. “Harmless users should experience minimal to no loss of privacy.”
But other experts and advocacy groups have come out against the changes. They say the iCloud and Messages updates have the same problem: they’re creating surveillance systems that work directly from your phone or tablet. That could provide a blueprint for breaking secure end-to-end encryption, and even if its use is limited right now, it could open the door to more troubling invasions of privacy."

I bambini devono poter sbagliare (e fare cose sbagliate, relativamente pericolose etc) altrimenti vengono su male.
Money quote: "A dynamic society requires citizens who appreciate that difficulties and failures are a part of life and that’s OK. Just as kids recover from a bike crash or playground fight, they can bounce back from failure and frustration in their adult lives, too. This is possible only if children grow up with some independence so that they arrive at adulthood with the resilience to handle life on their own."

Money quote: "There is psychological evidence that rebelliousness is essential for creativity. Harvard psychiatrist Albert Rothenberg spent more than five decades researching individuals who had made ground-breaking contributions to science, literature and the arts, seeking to understand what drove their creativity. As part of a broader research project that encompassed structured interviews, experimental studies and documentary analysis, Rothenberg interviewed 22 Nobel Laureates. He found that they were strongly emotionally driven by wanting to create something new, rather than extend current perspectives. He found they consciously saw things with a fresh mindset rather than blindly following established wisdom – two qualities that would seem to suggest a rebellious, rather than conformist, personality."

'Positive deviants': Why rebellious workers spark great ideas
Organisations tend to see rebels as troublemakers – but suppressing these individuals and their ideas could backfire.
Money quote: "Let’s work with a hypothetical example. Suppose I’m raised among atheists and firmly believe that God doesn’t exist. I realise that, had I grown up in a religious community, I would almost certainly have believed in God. Furthermore, we can imagine that, had I grown up a theist, I would have been exposed to all the considerations that I take to be relevant to the question of whether God exists: I would have learned science and history, I would have heard all the same arguments for and against the existence of God. The difference is that I would interpret this evidence differently. Divergences in belief result from the fact that people weigh the evidence for and against theism in varying ways. It’s not as if pooling resources and having a conversation would result in one side convincing the other – we wouldn’t have had centuries of religious conflict if things were so simple. Rather, each side will insist that the balance of considerations supports its position – and this insistence will be a product of the social environments that people on that side were raised in."

Money quote: "Sometimes we have the ability to do something, and even have a trigger like a time window and a to-do item, but we don't feel motivated.
We stare at a list of tasks, and stare, and stare, and none of them seem particularly exciting.
So we do something else - procrastinate."
