Money quote: "An interpunct is, of course, a vertically centered dot originally used to separate words in Latin and ancient Greek. (Spaces weren’t invented until several centuries later.) The interpunct is still in use today—it’s the official decimal point in British currency (£9·99), and is used to represent the dot product of two vectors in mathematics (x · y). Most relevantly, it’s used in Japanese to separate titles, names, and positions, as in “課長補佐 · 鈴木” (Assistant Section Head · Suzuki). It is therefore entirely appropriate as the separator in WALL·E, which is short for Waste Allocation Load Lifter · Earth Class."

Money quote: "The Magnum PI Aloha shirt made by the Pacific Clothing Company is one of the most iconic of all Hawaiian shirts. And this is because Tom Selleck often wore this shirt on the TV show Magnum PI. Some people have asked us if this is the actual shirt and label (Paradise Found) that he wore on the show. Well, as it turns out, yes it is. According to Tim Smith of Pacific Clothing Company, the maker of Paradise Found label, the TV show apparently sent someone to a department store called Liberty House (Liberty House was like the Hawaii version of Macy’s back in the 1980s) to find appropriate Aloha shirts for the show. Among the shirts that were chosen was the red “Jungle Bird” Aloha shirt that became Magnum PI’s signature shirt. Pacific Clothing found out after the fact that the shirt was being used and started providing the shirts directly to the show. So this most famous of Hawaiian shirts became famous by accident."

Money quote: "Ian Fogg, VP of Analysis at OpenSignal, urged mobile networks and smartphone platforms to rethink some basic assumptions. Currently a phone gloms onto a Wi-Fi network whenever it can, assuming this provides the user with a superior internet connection. But increasingly, this not the case.

Money quote: "Chronicle started as a project inside X, the semi-secretive "moonshot factory" owned by Google parent Alphabet. It was announced last January and immediately spun out into a standalone business underneath the Alphabet umbrella. The reveal confused some people who associate "moonshot" with head-turning hardware like self-driving cars, delivery drones and high-altitude balloons that provide internet service to rural areas. Cybersecurity, while undeniably important, seemed tame by comparison. What exactly had Chronicle built, and why did it need the moonshot treatment to exist?
The answer is complicated."
