Money quote: "Our consumer-sentiment surveys, conducted in April, show declines in purchase intent of 70 to 80 percent in offline and 30 to 40 percent in online in Europe and North America, even in countries that haven’t been under full lockdown. E-commerce is clearly not offsetting the sales declines in stores. Nevertheless, it has been a lifeline for fashion brands as stores have been shuttered—and it will continue to be critical during and after the recovery period. In China, the return of offline traffic has been gradual, with 74 percent of Chinese consumers saying they avoided shopping malls in the two weeks after stores reopened.1 This suggests that some percentage of offline sales could permanently migrate to e-commerce."

Money quote: "Chairs are important historical artefacts. They can represent the fashion and ethos of a particular moment in time or stand for an epochal idea. They are portraits of their users and reflect the production techniques with which they were created. You can recognise and understand an era – its social structures, its materials, techniques and fashions – by its chairs. I would go as far as to say that no other everyday object is so multi-faceted."

Money quote: "A funny thing happened in our current Newsletter Renaissance: inundation. Much like the television streaming era which is now in full-swing, we’re learning that there can, in fact, be too much of a good thing. At least for those of us who are completists. Which is to say: there are too many newsletters that I now subscribe to and want to read, but often cannot. Because, well, time.

There are a few possible solutions here.

First, we could simply unsubscribe from several of these newsletters. But that’s no fun. What if time magically appears and you yearn for one of those old friends in your inbox?"

Money quote: "The Satyricon contains a number of hapaxes, including “bacalusias” (possibly “sweetmeat” or ”lullabies”) and “baccibalum” (“attractive woman”)."

No?

Money quote: "One of the easiest things you can do to improve the look of your video is to simply turn on any light you have handy and position it behind the camera shining on your face. That might mean moving a lamp, or moving your computer if all your available lights are in a fixed position, but it can make a dramatic difference. Check out these examples below, screen grabbed from my Microsoft Surface Book 2 (which actually has a pretty good built-in video camera, as far as built-in video cameras go)."

Perché stare chiusi in casa ci mancherà.

Money quote: "“Quarantine” is no longer a verb, but a distinct time in our lives. In the past couple months, many of us have experienced contentment or even joy in this new world we inhabit. I’ve discovered a bakery I really love because they’re the only one in my neighborhood doing takeout, and I know I’ll forever associate this era with thick slices of sourdough toast in the morning. I’ve discovered new bands I really like since March, and I wonder if I’ll forever hear them and think about this time with some strange and uncomfortable fondness. I’m already nostalgic for this time when a head of cabbage thrills me as much as ice cream or wine."

Money quote: "A possible explanation of our finding is that the linear scale gives the impression of a growing pandemic, without any sign of improvement. At the same time, the curve on the logarithmic scale looks flatter and reassuring. However, it has a higher end-point value on the Y-axis, which might act as an anchor when assessing the short-term evolution of the pandemic. Therefore, while the logarithmic group predicts more deaths in the short term due to the higher anchor, the linear group expects the crisis to last longer. Consequently, the linear group is more worried about the health crisis, while anticipates to wear masks less often in order to ration them."
