The European Commission has proposed a plan to ban children under the age of 13 from using social media. Presented on Thursday, the plan aims to improve children’s safety online and would require online platforms to design dedicated children’s accounts with safety mechanisms. Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, officially introduced the proposal, called the EU Kids Act, at a press conference. Under the proposal, children aged 13 to 15 would not be allowed to have independent personal accounts, and their use of social media would have to be supervised by their parents.
