British serial killer Myra Hindley was allowed to complete an Open University degree in prison. She graduated in 1989 with a BA (Hons) in Humanities, and a special ceremony was held for her at Cookham Wood Prison.

Hindley was jailed for life in May 1966 along with her lover and partner in crime Ian Brady.

Hindley was found guilty of the murders of Lesley Ann Downey, 10, and Edward Evans, 17, plus being accessory to the murder of 12-year-old John Kilbride by Brady.

In 1987 Hindley and Brady confessed to murdering Pauline Reade, 16, and Keith Bennett, 12.

Hindley died in 2002 aged 60.

In 2010, a homeless man saved a woman from a knife attack in New York. He was stabbed trying to help, but despite being injured he chased the attacker away, then collapsed. CCTV cameras captured over 20 people walk past him. Some stared, but non helped. He ended up dying on the sidewalk where he collapsed. His name was Hugo Alfredo Tale-Yax.

8-year-old Thomas Valva froze to death after his dad an ex-police officer, forced him to sleep outside in a cold garage. He had a body temperature of 76 degrees when he was found. His body also shown signs of beatings and starvation.

In 1983, a man confessed to his wife's murder after part of a female skull was discovered in a peat bog near his home in England. He was convicted of her 1961 murder based on this confession.

The skull, however, turned out to be from a woman who had died about 1750 years earlier, dating back to the Roman period.

Richard Beasley aka "The Craigslist Killer" used Craigslist to post fake job offers in order to lure men to a remote spot in southern Ohio. Once they were there, Richard robbed, shot, and killed them. The scheme was only uncovered when a fourth man was shot but escaped.

The Nanjing Massacre or the Rape of Nanjing, was the mass murder of Chinese civilians in Nanjing, the capital of the Republic of China, immediately after the Battle of Nanking in the Second Sino-Japanese War, by the Imperial Japanese Army. Beginning on December 13, 1937, the massacre lasted six weeks.

The number of Chinese killed in the massacre has been subject to much debate, with most estimates ranging from 100,000 to more than 300,000.

Ted Kaczynski, better known as the “Unabomber" has passed away at the age of 81, in prison.

He killed three people and injured 23 more during a mass mail-bombing spree between 1978 and 1995.

He was arrested in 1996 and was sentenced to serve 8 life sentences in federal prison.

Ramon Artagaveytia was one of only 65 Passengers who survived the fire and sinking of a ship in 1871, leaving him emotionally scarred. 41 years later, he was able to finally overcome his fear and decided visit the US and boarded the Titanic on April 10, 1912. He died on the ship as it sank.

The pear of anguish, also known as choke pear or mouth pear, is a device of disputed use invented in the early modern period.

The mechanism consists of a pear-shaped metal body divided into spoon-like segments that can be spread apart with a spring or by turning a key.

Its proposed functionality as a torture device is to be variously inserted into the mouth, rectum, or vagina, and then expanded to gag or mutilate the victim.

In 2018, 14-year-old Tyrone Harvin was helping his 83-year-old neighbor out with some chores when he suddenly started to beat her and rape her until she was unconscious and later died.

In 1966, Charles Whitman murdered his wife and mother before climbing the University of Texas Tower and picking off random bystanders, killing 14 of them.

Prior to the shooting, Whitman had seen various doctors due to sudden headaches and irrational thoughts from which he suffered, but to no avail, so he left a suicide note requesting an autopsy.

During the autopsy it was found that a brain tumor had been pressing against his amygdala (emotional center of the brain).

On May 23, 2023, 71-year-old Margaret Craig, was killed by her daughter, 44-year-old Candace Craig. Margaret's granddaughter, 19-year-old Salia Hardy, helped dispose of her grandmother's body by dismembering her with a chainsaw and barbecuing her remains.

In 2001, two bakery workers died in agony after being sent into a giant oven to carry out repairs. The machine should have been allowed to cool for 12 hours, but was only left for two.

The repair was a delicate procedure that involved crawling along a tight, 75ft-long conveyor belt that slowly cooks bagels.

Within five minutes the men were relaying terrified messages over their walkie-talkies, saying the oven's core was way too hot. But there was no way of reversing the belt and they were trapped on its journey through the oven.

lan Erickson, 44, was pulled out at the other end and died on the factory floor in front of horrified workmates.

David Mayes, 47, collapsed inside and was caught in the machinery. He died from 80 percent burns and multiple fractures.
