British serial killer Myra Hindley was allowed to complete an Open University degree in prison. She graduated in 1989 with a BA (Hons) in Humanities, and a special ceremony was held for her at Cookham Wood Prison.

Hindley was jailed for life in May 1966 along with her lover and partner in crime Ian Brady.

Hindley was found guilty of the murders of Lesley Ann Downey, 10, and Edward Evans, 17, plus being accessory to the murder of 12-year-old John Kilbride by Brady.

In 1987 Hindley and Brady confessed to murdering Pauline Reade, 16, and Keith Bennett, 12.

Hindley died in 2002 aged 60.

In 2010, a homeless man saved a woman from a knife attack in New York. He was stabbed trying to help, but despite being injured he chased the attacker away, then collapsed. CCTV cameras captured over 20 people walk past him. Some stared, but non helped. He ended up dying on the sidewalk where he collapsed. His name was Hugo Alfredo Tale-Yax.

The Nanjing Massacre or the Rape of Nanjing, was the mass murder of Chinese civilians in Nanjing, the capital of the Republic of China, immediately after the Battle of Nanking in the Second Sino-Japanese War, by the Imperial Japanese Army. Beginning on December 13, 1937, the massacre lasted six weeks.

The number of Chinese killed in the massacre has been subject to much debate, with most estimates ranging from 100,000 to more than 300,000.

Ted Kaczynski, better known as the “Unabomber" has passed away at the age of 81, in prison.

He killed three people and injured 23 more during a mass mail-bombing spree between 1978 and 1995.

He was arrested in 1996 and was sentenced to serve 8 life sentences in federal prison.

Ramon Artagaveytia was one of only 65 Passengers who survived the fire and sinking of a ship in 1871, leaving him emotionally scarred. 41 years later, he was able to finally overcome his fear and decided visit the US and boarded the Titanic on April 10, 1912. He died on the ship as it sank.

The pear of anguish, also known as choke pear or mouth pear, is a device of disputed use invented in the early modern period.

The mechanism consists of a pear-shaped metal body divided into spoon-like segments that can be spread apart with a spring or by turning a key.

Its proposed functionality as a torture device is to be variously inserted into the mouth, rectum, or vagina, and then expanded to gag or mutilate the victim.
