The 1992 Somalia famine was a result of devastation inflicted by warring factions in southern Somalia, primarily the Somali National Front, which ravaged grain stores in the fertile inter-riverine agricultural belt around the Jubba and Shebelle rivers.

Nearly 300,000 innocent people starved to death as a result.

The kid on the right, Bart Whitaker, had paid two of his buddies to murder his family that night. They would kill the mother and brother, but the father, who took the photo, survived.

Bart was later sentenced to death, but after his father strongly opposed it, Texas Governor Greg Abbott granted him clemency, and he is now serving a life sentence.

In 2002, Jason Padgett was brutally beaten outside a karaoke bar, resulting in a brain concussion and a severe case of PTSD.

But this may have actually been the best thing that happened to him because he now has Acquired Savant Syndrome - Savant syndrome is a condition in which a person demonstrates profound and remarkable knowledge after suffering a physical or psychological trauma. 

Savant skills are usually found in one or more of five major areas: art, musical abilities, calendar calculation, mathematics, and spatial skills and as many as 50 cases of sudden or acquired savant syndrome have been reported, thought likely many more go unreported.

But even so, the syndrome is extremely rare, and for someone to develop sudden mathematical skills, that's even rarer.

This is a Teddy bear made out of human placenta. The placenta is cut in half and rubbed with sea salt in order to cure it. After it is dried out, it is treated with an emulsifying mixture of tannin and egg yolk to make it soft and pliable. Then, it is crafted into a teddy bear.

Delphine LaLaurie, a 19th-century socialite in New Orleans, was exposed as a prolific slave torturer and murderer after her cook, who was chained to the stove, set a fire as a suicide attempt to escape further torture.

The fire prompted a group of men to investigate LaLaurie's attic, where they found horribly mutilated slaves wearing spiked iron collars.

In 2012, Anthony Omari took a machete to the face while defending an under-resourced Kenyan orphanage from attacking thieves, saving 37 orphans.

The attack was in revenge of a previously foiled robbery, during which Anthony threw a hammer at one of the thieves.

Following the attack, a Penn State student called Ben Hardwick posted a picture of Omari and his zipper-like scar on Reddit.

As a result of the post, Reddit users donated more than $80,000 to help upgrade the orphanage's defenses.

Execution by elephant was an old method of capital punishment in South and Southeast Asia, particularly in India, where Asian elephants were used to crush, dismember or torture captives in public executions.

The animals were trained to kill victims immediately or to torture them slowly over a prolonged period.

Most commonly employed by royalty, the elephants were used to signify both the ruler's power of life and death over his subjects and his ability to control wild animals.

In 2007, while on death row for killing a police officer in 1982, a Tennessee man named Philip Workman requested that instead of a last meal, a pizza be donated to a local homeless person. His final request was denied.

On May 9, 2007, homeless shelters across Tennessee received massive numbers of pizzas of various toppings from people all over the country honoring Workman's last meal request.

51-year-old William Melchert-Dinkel went online and joined suicide websites using the aliases "Falcongirl" or "Cami D" to encouraged people to commit suicide. He was charged for assisting in the suicides of Mark Drybrough and Nadia Kajouji but admitted to assisting in several more suicides.

The Hello Kitty murder case took place in Hong Kong in the spring of 1999, when a nightclub hostess was abducted in Lai Yiu Estate, where the victim was tortured and raped in an apartment in Tsim Sha Tsui after stealing a wallet owned by one of her frequent customers.

Fan Man-yee was held captive by three men and one girl before dying between April 14 to April 15, 1999.

Her body was decapitated and her skull placed inside of a Hello Kitty mermaid plush, which gave the name for the murder case.

On December 7, 2000, after a trial which started on October 20, three men were convicted of manslaughter, as the jury ruled the remains were not sufficient to show whether Fan was murdered or died from a drug overdose.

The trio were sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole.
