U.S. Markets Closing Updates |S&P 500 marks 5th straight gain, up 5% as China tensions cool
๐บ๐ธ The S&P 500 rose Friday for a fifth session & posted a sharp weekly gain, as investors looked past the release of disappointing consumer sentiment data & persistent inflation worry.
๐บ๐ธ The broad market index climbed 0.70% to end at 5,958.38, while the Nasdaq Composite
gained 0.52% to close at 19,211.10.
๐บ๐ธ The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 331.99 points, or 0.78%, settling at 42,654.74. Fridayโs advance put the 30-stock benchmark into positive territory for 2025.
๐บ๐ธ For the week, the S&P 500 surged 5.3% & the Dow gained 3.4%.
๐บ๐ธ The Nasdaq Composite jumped 7.2% this week. Technology stocks also had a strong week. Shares of Nvidia gained about 16%, while Meta Platforms advanced 8%. Shares of Apple climbed 6%, while Microsoft popped 3%.
๐บ๐ธ The major averages rose even after the University of Michiganโs consumer sentiment index came in at its second-lowest level on record. Consumers also see prices rising 7.3% over the next year, up from 6.5% last month.
๐บ๐ธ Stocks have made a strong comeback since U.S. & Chinese officials earlier this week agreed on a 90-day truce in their tariff measures, which eased investorsโ fears of escalating Global trade tensions & rising risk to the economy.
๐บ๐ธ โMarkets are repricing the stagflation risk right now โ what was once the base case for folks who were sure that tariffs were going to shoot inflation skyward immediately, really hasnโt been supported in the data,โ said Jamie Cox, managing partner at Harris Financial Group.
๐บ๐ธ Wall Street is also hoping that there will be more clarity on the trade front in the weeks ahead.
๐บ๐ธ President Donald Trump said Friday that his administration will send letters to many countries detailing new tariff rates, possibly over the next two to three weeks. Those letters would take the place of trade negotiations with countries where the U.S. doesnโt have time to meet.
Contrarians beware: individual investors are the most bullish since January
๐บ๐ธ Contrarians who like to bet against the crowd rather than with it might think about lightening up on stocks after the latest American Association of Individual Investors weekly survey showed optimism at the highest level, 35.9%, since late January (41.0%).
๐บ๐ธ Similarly, bearishness about the outlook for stocks over the coming six months slumped to 44.4% this week โ the smallest since mid-February when the S&P 500 closed at an all-time high โ down from 51.5% last week.
๐บ๐ธ Bullishness is now close to its long-term historical average of 37.5% in the survey, while bearishness remains far above its long-run average of just 31.0%. The reason is that investors who describe themselves as neutral on the short-term outlook for stocks stands at 19.7% this week versus an historical average of 31.5%.
๐บ๐ธ Some investors look at sentiment surveys such as AAIIโs as contrarian indicators, believing that increased bullishness means more investors are done buying & hold less in cash reserves. More bearishness can mean investors are closer to being done selling & have more fire power to put to work in the form of elevated cash.
