U.S. Markets Closing Updates | Dow tumbles nearly 600 points, S&P 500 goes negative for 2026 in tech sector rout
๐บ๐ธ On Thursday, February 5, 2026, U.S. stock markets closed sharply lower, with the S&P 500 entering negative territory for 2026 after a second consecutive day of losses driven by a broad sell-off in technology & software stocks.
๐บ๐ธ The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 592.58 points (1.20%) to close at 48,908.72.
๐บ๐ธ The S&P 500 declined 1.23%, ending at 6,798.40, its first negative close of the year.
๐บ๐ธ The Nasdaq Composite fell 1.59% to 22,540.59, weighed down by tech & chip stocks.
๐บ๐ธ Alphabet was the latest of the โMagnificent Sevenโ Companies to report earnings results. The company projected a sharp increase in artificial intelligence spending that spooked some investors, calling for 2026 capital expenditures of up to $185 billion. Shares lost 0.5%.
๐บ๐ธ However, shares of Broadcom climbed almost 1% following news of Alphabetโs spending plans, offering some hope for the artificial intelligence trade as the market deciphers its winners & losers.
๐บ๐ธ Alongside Alphabet, Qualcomm came under pressure, sliding more than 8% after posting a weaker-than-expected forecast because of a global memory shortage.
๐บ๐ธ Elsewhere, the sell-off in the cryptocurrency market continued to gain steam, as bitcoin fell below $64,000 after earlier sinking under the $70,000 threshold, which is considered a key support level. In the precious metals space, pressure on silver resumed. The metalโs prices snapped a two-day rebound & dropped as much as 16%. It had plummeted nearly 30% last Friday.

๐บ๐ธ Adding to the downbeat sentiment, concerns surrounding labor market weakness grew after outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas reported that U.S. employers announced 108,435 layoffs in January, marking the highest January total since the Global financial crisis.
๐บ๐ธ On top of that, initial jobless claims for the week ended Jan. 31 rose more than expected & job openings in December fell to their lowest level since September 2020.
๐บ๐ธ This comes ahead of next weekโs release of the Bureau of Labor Statisticsโ January jobs report, which was pushed back as a result of the partial Government shutdown that ended Tuesday.
