U.S. Markets Closing Updates | S&P 500 ends Friday with another record close, scores a winning week
🇺🇸
Major stock indexes ended sharply highs Friday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average & S&P 500 setting closing records, after the U.S. unemployment rate declined more than expected in December.
🇺🇸 The S&P 500 rose to new highs on Friday, notching a weekly gain, following the release of the latest jobs report.
🇺🇸 The broad market index closed up 0.65% to 6,966.28, a fresh record close. It also notched a new all-time intraday high in the session.
🇺🇸 The Nasdaq Composite gained 0.81% to 23,671.35. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 237.96 points, or 0.48%, to end at 49,504.07, scoring a new closing record as well.
🇺🇸 The tech-heavy Nasdaq, benchmark S&P 500 & blue-chip Dow finished the day up 0.8%, 0.7%, & 0.5%, resp.
🇺🇸 For the week, Dow rose 2.3%, while Nasdaq added 1.9% & the S&P 500 tacked on 1.6%.

🇺🇸 The monthly jobs report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics revealed the U.S. economy added 50,000 nonfarm jobs in December, below the 73,000 expected & weaker than the revised figure of 56,000 jobs added in November. However, the unemployment rate ticked down to 4.4% from 4.6% the month before, lower than the expected 4.5% rate.
🇺🇸 The unemployment rate inched down to 4.4%, while economists had forecast 4.5%. Traders took that as a sign that improvement in the economy would happen soon.
🇺🇸 Considering the latest payrolls data alongside the JOLTS and ADP reports released this week, Anthony Saglimbene of Ameriprise Financial believes the consensus around the U.S. employment backdrop is that it has “softened” but is also “remaining firm.” This reflects a “low-hire, low-fire” environment, he added.
🇺🇸 The December report was the first month of jobs figures unaffected by the record-setting U.S. Government shutdown. That stoppage posed data collection challenges for the Bureau of Labor Statistics with regards to October and November: The agency said that a full October jobs report wouldn’t be released, and the November report was delayed.

🇺🇸 The 10-year Treasury yield, which influences interest rates on a variety of commercial & consumer loans, was around 4.17% at 4 p.m. ET, little changed from Thursday's close.
🇺🇸 The U.S. Supreme Court did not decide on the legality of Trump's use of emergency powers to impose tariffs on Friday, which had been a possibility. When it does issue a decision, it could back the "Liberation Day" levies announced in April or go as far as to deem them illegal & roll them back. A ruling could bring clarity to trade policy that has been muddled for nearly a year & which, when first announced, shocked markets that have since recovered.
🇺🇸 West Texas Intermediate futures, the U.S. Crude Oil benchmark, were up 1.8% to $58.80 a barrel as oil executives met President Trump about doing business in Venezuela, while gold futures advanced 1.3% to $4,515 an ounce.

🇺🇸 Bitcoin was trading around $90,200, little changed on the day. The U.S. dollar index, which tracks the value of the greenback against a basket of foreign currencies, was 0.2% higher at 99.13.
