The given graph compares four ways of goods shipment in the UK over a course of 28 years, starting from 1974.

Overall, it is clear that the total amount of freight grew considerably in the UK. Moreover, road was responsible for by far the most cargo transportation.

In 1974, about 70 million tonnes of goods were transported through road. While the figures for water and rail were relatively similar, at nearly 40 million tonnes, that for pipeline was insignificant. Although there was a great difference in the volume of goods transported via road and pipeline, the trend they both followed was similar: a growing one. The former finished the period at approximately 100 million tonnes, which was almost 5 times greater than the figure for pipeline.

Despite starting the period at similar numbers, the shipment of goods through rail and water followed different tendencies. The latter mode of transportation constituted 60 million tonnes of UK freight in 1974, almost an 1.5-fold increase. The amount of goods shipped via rail actually decreased in the early 1980s, but it grew again to finish the period at the 1974 figure.
TASK: In some countries the average weight of people is increasing and their levels of health and fitness is decreasing.

What do you think are the causes of these problems and what measures could be taken to solve them?

The problem of obesity has become common in many countries, and it, in turn, is taking its toll on general well-being and physique of people. There are several reasons behind this phenomenon, and luckily, governments and people can address these problems in many ways.

Improper eating habits and disrupted work-life balance can be said to attribute to the extra weight gain and the decrease in the public health. People lead busy lifestyles working long hours. Therefore, they have literally no time to prepare healthy nutritious meals. As a result, they turn to fast food or processed food to compenstae the time spent at work. To solve this problem, the government should pass a law stating that all companies and organizations, especially in a private sector, have to reduce working hours. It would be a win-win situation as workers would be able to spare time to engage in a physical activity and prepare meals rich in nutrition, and companies would enjoy higher productivity among their work force

Moreover, the nature of most jobs now is somehow sedentary; more and more occupations require from people to sit down in front of a computer, putting in information. Because of this, many workers suffer from various health problems. This issue could be tackled by introducing better ergonomic practices to workplaces. If managers encourage physical activity during a work day, it will be even better.

To conclude, the rise in the number of overweight people can be attributed to ill nutrition and sedentary lifestyles. The problem, however, can be solved through several ways.
