Lal Bahadur Shastri, 2 October 1904 – 11 January 1966) was an Indian statesman who served as the second Prime Minister of India.

He promoted the White Revolution – a national campaign to increase the production and supply of milk – by supporting the Amul milk co-operative of Anand, Gujarat and creating the National Dairy Development Board.

Underlining the need to boost India's food production, Shastri also promoted the Green Revolution in India in 1965.

This led to an increase in food grain production, especially in Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh.

“I never met my great-grandfather, Mahatma Gandhi; I was born 12 years after he passed. But his life journey became my bedtime stories. There was a lesson in each one.

One such story is from 1946; Bapu was getting medicines for Sardar Patel when a man with a gift requested Dad, ‘Please give this to Bapu.’ When Bapu opened it, there were torn sandals & clothes. Dad was insulted, but Bapu said, ‘What a gift!’ He sold the items & deposited the money into the Harijan fund. Later, Bapu thanked the man for the gift. The man wanted to break Bapu’s non-violent streak, but went back feeling ashamed.

2 years after Bapu’s assasination, when Grandma saw a photo of the assassin in the newspaper, she asked Dad, ‘Didn’t he give Bapu that gift?’ That man was Nathuram Godse. In those 2 years, Godse grew angrier, while Bapu focused on doing good. This story shaped me as a person.
Bapu’s also taught me to relish the legacy I’m born into. I spin khadi & attend ashram prayers. In school, I told anecdotes about Bapu during History class.

But the weight of the ‘Gandhi’ surname is heavy. Once, while giving a speech, I accidentally said, ‘When India achieved independence in 1948.’ My principal scoffed, ‘Bapu brought us freedom. How can you forget the year?’ Every time I didn’t live up to his expectations, the criticism was far greater for me than a normal person.

So, I try to honor Bapu’s reputation.

Over the years, on my ashram visits, I’ve met so many people who’ve been touched by him. One such man is Laxman Gole. He was a criminal who read Bapu’s autobiography in jail. He was so moved that he pleaded ‘guilty’ at his trial & said, ‘I’m going to live an honest life!’
Now that he’s completed his term, he teaches Gandhian values to prisoners. He told me, ‘Bapu saved my life & now I’ll save others.' ‘Munnabhai’ is inspired by his story!
