26/11 Short Story

 (1/9) [9:20 PM, CST]

“I was peacefully setting up my stall at CST that night– it was an ordinary Wednesday.

Suddenly I heard a shot from a distance; it was as if there was a short circuit. So I got out to check; I stood on a stool to get a better view. The first thing I saw was a police officer crawling towards other passengers and telling them to run.

The guy in the stall next to me said that people are firing– I froze. I fell to the floor. After that I saw a mother clutching her baby and running– they shot the child first and then the mother– I went completely numb; that sight still haunts me.

The firing then came closer to our stalls– they shot at my door and then a bullet pierced my shoulder; I didn’t make a sound. I just held my breath and continued to lay on the floor. After about 27-28 minutes when the firing stopped, I finally got out of my stall. 2 other shop owners were with me.

I’ll never forget that sight there were bodies everywhere, a few injured people were still alive and bleeding; we started putting them in cars and handcarts to take them to the hospital. We found more passengers hiding in different parts of the station they didn’t know exit points; I showed them the exit and asked them to run.

But I lost 3 of my friends that night the man who had a bookstore on the opposite platform, the jhadu wala who kept this station clean and the TC chacha.

But I still come back here to work everyday I’ve kept the bullet marks from that night inside my stall to remember.

The fear is still there, but honestly, so is the regret. There was a point where Kasab and Ismail were just 5 feet away from me if I had a pistol I could have shot them and ended it right there. But their carnage had just begun.”  #ChabbisGyara

(2/9) [9:40 PM, Leopold Cafe]

“I was on night duty at Colaba Wadi that night. Around 9:20 we got a message on the wireless that there’s some ‘gadbad’ happening at Leopold. My initial hunch was that it was to do with the fact that there was an India-England cricket match that night. We’d won, so I thought people were bursting crackers and creating some ruckus. So 4 of us cops made our way to Leopold.

Outside Leopold, people were running helter skelter. There, I saw the bodies of 2 foreigners lying at the entrance. I couldn’t believe my eyes there was smoke everywhere and I could hear people wailing in pain. I had my gun handy, I stepped out of the back of the van. I’d put one foot on the ground when they opened the first round of fire, a bullet grazed my shoulder; a second bullet pierced my right palm I fell to the ground.

As I lay there, all I could hear was firing, screaming and then an eerie silence. Before any of us could even process what was happening they’d disappeared in a cloud of smoke and were headed towards the Taj.

As I was being driven to the hospital, I prayed hard. Not for myself, but for my city I knew this was no ordinary attack.”

(3/9) [9:45 PM,Taj]

“My bodyguard Amit Khetle & I were on our way to Leopold when I got a 2nd call from the DGP. There was firing & blasts happening at Taj; we rerouted there. Armed with 1 pistol each & no bullet proof vests. we entered Taj from the rear gate.

There we met the Taj security chief Mr. Kudiyadi. The terrorists were mindlessly shooting; he led me to them. On the 2nd floor of the royal staircase, Mr. Kudiyadi showed me 3 terrorists, 10 metres away their backs were to us.

I saw an opportunity to kill them & took it I fired 3 rounds. 1 of them was injured, but they sprayed AK-47 rounds back, we sheltered behind a pillar. They disappeared.

We then scanned every floor until the 6th. It was chaos blood, bodies, gunpowder & intermittent firing, we had no idea where from. We didn’t know there were just 4; nascent intel stated there could be 100 terrorists in the city!

Until 11 PM it was a blind war; the Taj had gone into a deep silence. I thought they’d escaped, so we went to the main gate where 4 constables joined us. Just then, there were 2 blasts from inside we went to the 6th floor. When we couldn’t locate them, me & my batchmate Rajvardhan who’d entered Taj by then, decided to go to the CCTV room.

On CCTV we saw 3 terrorists hitting 5 hostages & trying to get them down. I called the control room. CP Sir said, ‘The naval commandos are coming in a few minutes; keep them pinned down.’ On behalf of our team, I said, ‘We will not allow them to come down, though we die.’

We began firing; they threw grenades & fired back at 3 AM they set the dome on fire. But we kept them occupied & 600 people were rescued from inside Taj.

By then, they knew we were in the CCTV room. So we formed a chain & made our way out, but they saw us & sprayed us with bullets. Our team got split up. Amit was shot thrice; Rahul Shinde was martyred, Rajvardhan & I made it to Crystal Hall.

We had no cell phones, no walkies. We waited there until the NSG arrived, gave them intel & then they carried out their operation. Honestly, I was sure I wouldn’t make it out alive. Even my family thought I was dead; they were preparing for my funeral but I did my duty & went home.”

(4/9) [10:00 PM,Cama Hospital]

“That night, I called Salaskar Saheb & told him about the situation at CST. I’ve worked with Salaskar Saheb since 1996. He was a brother to me; I accompanied him on every operation. 26/11 was no different after I reported to him, he called me to Colaba station. On my way, I picked up a sten gun; I knew something was horribly wrong.

When I saw Salaskar Saheb, he was on call with Maria Sir. We were called to the control room. On our way there, we crossed a nakabandi they told Saheb that the 2 terrorists from CST had gone to Cama. We rerouted.

At Cama, I saw about 50 cops–ATS team, crime branch & Karkare Sir. We could hear firing & grenade bombs from inside Cama. Soon, Kamte Sir joined us–he was motivating us to fight them.

Just then, an officer drenched in blood staggered out of the back gate; he told us that 2 constables were dead & Mr. Sadanand Date was injured. Just as we were helping him into a car, bullets poured down on us from above.

At that point Kamte Sir picked up his AK-47 & fired above in retaliation. After that, there was silence. Kamte Sir made a plan to go to the main gate, call for support & storm the building.
Kamte Sir, Karkare Sir & Salaskar Saheb sat in the Qualis I was getting in the back when Salaskar Saheb said to me, ‘Bhau wait, we’ll see & come back.’ But I’d never let him go on an operation alone. So along with 2 more operators & the driver, the 7 of us set out; I was at the very back.
