A Unique Tradition, Forced Rice Eating Ritual

A Buddhist temple in Tochigi Prefecture, north of Tokyo, has held a unique traditional ceremony in which monks symbolically force people to eat huge bowls of rice. The ritual is said to eradicate misfortune and bring good fortune. The event, known as “Gouhanshiki,” took place at Rinnoji Temple in Nikko City. “Gouhanshiki” is believed to have originated from the habit of monks training in the mountains bringing back and sharing offerings with people.
