World Rabies Day is commemorated every year on 28 September, the day that marks the anniversary of Louis Pasteur's death, who led the development of the first rabies vaccine.
Rabies affects domestic and wild animals and is spread to people through close contact with infectious material, usually saliva, via bites or scratches.
Around the world, dogs are the most common animal affected by rabies, with more than 99 percent of human cases coming from dog bites.

The 23rd Kunming International Flower Expo kicked off in Kunming, capital of southwest China’s Yunnan Province, attracting more than 500 enterprises from around the world. The three-day exhibition features a display of four major industries: flowers, coffee, tropical plants, and small berries, offering visitors a glimpse into the charm of Yunnan’s agriculture. As China’s “flower capital,” Yunnan has become a major hub for both production and trade. In 2024 alone, the province produced more than 20 billion stems of fresh-cut flowers and exported them to over 50 countries and regions.

Apple Gets Stronger-Than-Expected Demand

Apple is ramping up production of its latest iPhone model following stronger-than-expected demand. According to a report by The Information, the tech giant has asked at least two of its suppliers including Luxshare Precision, one of its main iPhone assemblers in China alongside Foxconn to increase daily output of the standard iPhone 17 by 30 to 40 percent. The move comes after last weekend’s pre-orders showed a surprising trend: more consumers are opting for the entry-level $799 iPhone 17, rather than the higher-end Pro models, which start at $1,099.

Jeju Island Female Divers Promote Fishing Culture

Female divers on South Korea’s Jeju Island are participating in a weekend event to promote their fishing culture, which is registered as the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. The local municipality celebrates the “Day of Female Divers” every year on the third Saturday in September. This traditional fishery is still active on the island, bringing in catches of abalone, turban shells and other marine products. On Saturday, about 300 divers wearing goggles and traditional cotton swimwear paraded on the street, singing songs wishing for a good catch.

Centuries-old puppet show in Japan

An annual mechanized puppet show, which dates back about 280 years, kicked off at a shrine in Fukuoka Prefecture. The event is said to have begun in the middle of the Edo period when lantern puppets were presented to Fukushima Hachiman Shrine in the southwestern Japanese prefecture. This year’s performance depicts a shrine visit by a feudal lord and his subordinates who were intoxicated with sake in a spring setting. The drama was performed on a three-layer, two-storeyed stage set up on the shrine grounds.
