An annual winter event of lighting up traditional thatched-roof houses has begun at a UNESCO World Heritage site in Gifu Prefecture’s Shirakawa Village of central Japan, a popular tourist destination with rustic Gassho-style houses. A total of 108 spotlights were turned on, letting visitors enjoy the steep, snow-covered roofs and trees illuminated against the darkness. International Zebra Day is all about raising awareness on conservation of zebras, possessing unique black and white stripes.
Zebras are mostly found on the African continent, in the semi-desert areas of Kenya and Ethiopia, and the hilly areas of Namibia, Angola, and South Africa.
There are currently three different species of zebra living in the wild: Gravy’s zebra, plains zebra and mountain zebra.
