Capybara Hot Spring Bath
Visitors to an animal park in western Japan have enjoyed the sight of its capybara getting some respite from the winter cold by soaking in a warm bath filled with water from a hot spring. Keepers began filling the capybara’s open-air bath with hot water from the Yuda Onsen hot-spring resort and adding “yuzu” citrus fruit. It is traditional in Japan to take a dip in a hot bath with the fruit floating in it on the winter solstice. Visitors were delighted to see the capybara apparently enjoying soaking in the bath, happy and relaxed as it warmed itself up.

Led by Vikings and the steady beat of a pipe band, a river of flame moves through Edinburgh’s Old Town as 15,000 people take part in the torchlight procession. The march opens the city’s Hogmanay celebrations, lighting the winter night and welcoming the New Year. The tradition began more than 30 years ago, inspired by Shetland’s Up HellyAa festival. Since then, Vikings from Shetland have returned each year, keeping alive rituals rooted in ancient, pagan customs. Over four days, around 100,000 people gather in Edinburgh to celebrate Hogmanay. Ancient Ball-Kicking Game in the Western City of Kyoto
People clad in ancient Japanese court outfits have performed a time-honored ball-kicking game to mark the New Year at a shrine in the western city of Kyoto. The custom called kemari is said to have been played by noblemen in the Heian Period that lasted from the late 8th to the 12th century. Kemari players use a white deerskin ball measuring about 20 centimeters in diameter. A local group of people, working to preserve kemari, plays the game at Shimogamo Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage site, on January 4 every year to pray for peace and happiness.
