No Jewish court sat in Massachusetts; this was a Protestant vow, self-inflicted, and it stuck. Two centuries on, John Adams still insisted the Hebrews had done more to civilize men than any other nation and that he really wished the Jews again in Judea an independent nation. Lincoln, in wartime, heard the same restoration proposed and called it a noble dream, shared by many Americans. That was the first instance America made itself a slave to a foreign people: not by tribute or garrison, but by writing another nation's covenants into its own soul.
