New England's Puritans opened the Hebrew Bible as a deed still in force, and from that hour, the American mind was yoked to a people most of the colonies had never met. Increase Mather taught that the Jews would be converted as a nation, reduced again into their own land, and raised to great empire and rule in the world, and he would give the Lord no rest until Jerusalem was inhabited again in her own place, even in Jerusalem. No Jewish court sat in Massachusetts; this was a Protestant vow, self-inflicted, and it stuck. Two centuries on, John Adams still insisted the Hebrews had done more to civilize men than any other nation and that he really wished the Jews again in Judea an independent nation. Lincoln, in wartime, heard the same restoration proposed and called it a noble dream, shared by many Americans. That was the first instance America made itself a slave to a foreign people: not by tribute or garrison, but by writing another nation's covenants into its own soul.
