🎥 Would the recognition of a Palestinian state trigger an old US law that would require the US to cut funding to the UN?

MEE speaks to lawyer and legal officer at the ICJP*, Mirna Naseer, to explain how an old US law puts the decision for the US to defund the UN, on the recognition of Palestinian statehood at the UN.

The US law from the 1990s explicitly states that the US will have to pull funding for the UN or any specialised agency that gives the PLO the same standing as a member state.

In 2013 Palestine’s name at the UN changed from the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) to the State of Palestine.

Israel will stop the Spanish embassy from providing consular services to Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz said on Friday.

The move follows Spain’s decision to recognise Palestine as a state earlier this week, and comments made by the country’s deputy prime minister, who said “from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free”.

“Following Spain’s recognition of a Palestinian state and the Spanish deputy prime minister’s antisemitic call... I have decided to... prohibit the Spanish embassy from providing services to Palestinians from Judea and Samaria,” the foreign minister wrote on Friday in a post on X, formerly Twitter, using the Biblical name for the occupied territory.

“If this ignorant, hate-filled individual wants to understand what radical Islam truly seeks, she should study the 700 years of Islamic rule in Al-Andalus – today’s Spain,” Katz added.

🎥 On Thursday, German police evacuated dozens of protesting students from Humboldt University in downtown Berlin.

The students have staged a sit-in protest, in solidarity with Gaza.

Student Coalition Berlin, the group which organised the protest, has urged for the university to “stop the genocide in Palestine” and “fully boycott Israel academically and culturally.”

Police spokeswoman Beate Ostertag has said that 130 people were detained during the evacuation, while some of them voluntarily left the building and some had to lead by the police officers.
📸 A group of Israeli left-wing activists gathered outside the US consulate in West Jerusalem to stage a peaceful protest against the ongoing war in Gaza. Israeli security forces were later seen forcefully dispersing the demonstration.

Since Israel’s war on Gaza began in October, the Biden administration has thrown its full diplomatic weight behind Israel while also speeding up arms shipments to the country as it began to prepare for a ground invasion of the enclave.

Over the past eight months, legal experts, rights groups, and Palestinians have all criticised the Biden administration’s material support for Israel’s war effort.

The support continued to flow to Israel despite documented cases in which Israeli forces targeted schools and residential buildings and laid siege to hospitals. So far, more than 35,000 Palestinians have been killed, most of whom are women and children, according to the Palestinian health ministry.

Razan, a blind girl from Gaza, breaks down in tears as she recounts the fear of living under constant shelling after Israeli forces target Jabalia camp.
American comedian Dave Chappelle said on Thursday that a “genocide” is taking place in Gaza.

Chappelle made the comments while performing in Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates which has maintained its diplomatic relations with Israel.

Before coming on stage, the full crowd at Abu Dhabi’s Etihad Arena cheered as DJ Trauma, who accompanied Chappelle on the trip, played the song “My Blood is Palestinian” by the Palestinian singer Mohammed Assaf.

Chappelle also noted that making Jews safer in America amid rising cases of anti-Semitism would make them realise they do not need Israel as an ultimate protector.

🎥 Hundreds of students walked out of the Harvard commencement on Thursday to express solidarity with Palestine and over a dozen students who were barred from graduation for participating in the Gaza solidarity encampment at Harvard.

In late April, student protesters had set up a Gaza solidarity encampment on campus grounds to call for a ceasefire in Gaza and demanded the university to divest from Israel. The camp was voluntarily dismantled in May after administrators agreed to sit down with the protesters to discuss their demands.

📰 The Cannes Film Festival may claim to shy away from politics, but attendees this year have demonstrated, once again, the intricate connection between the world of fashion and politics.

Following Cate Blanchett’s rumoured ode to Palestinians, supermodel Bella Hadid strolled the streets of the Mediterranean city on Thursday decked out in a red and white keffiyeh dress.

A bold celebration of Hadid’s Palestinian heritage, the dress appeared to be a statement of solidarity and comes as Israel continues its military assault on the Gaza Strip, which has left over 35,000 Palestinians dead.
