Mexico's Policy Shield: The Gasoline Cap

In response to these pressures, President Claudia Sheinbaum's administration has implemented a direct fiscal intervention. To shield consumers from the volatile market, the government has capped the price of regular gasoline at 24 Mexican pesos per liter.

How it works: The government has effectively removed taxes on gasoline to absorb the international price spike.

The cost: Without this intervention, President Sheinbaum stated that gasoline would be over 30 pesos per liter. This policy, while stabilizing prices, forces the government to sacrifice significant fuel tax revenue.

The "Hidden" Vulnerability: Natural Gas

While the gasoline cap addresses consumer prices, a deeper structural issue has been exposed: Mexico's heavy reliance on imported natural gas.

Dependence: Mexico imports 75% of its natural gas consumption, primarily via pipelines from the United States. This gas powers 58% of the country's electricity generation and is vital for industrial boilers in factories.

The Domino Effect: When global crude prices spike due to the Hormuz crisis, U.S. refined products and natural gas prices rise as well. These higher costs are then passed directly to Mexican buyers, from power generators to transport companies, adding inflationary pressure across the supply chain.
