A strong earthquake rattled southern and central Mexico on Friday, interrupting President Claudia Sheinbaum’s first press briefing of the new year as seismic alarms sounded.

The earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 6.5 and its epicenter was near the town of San Marcos in the southern state of Guerrero near the Pacific coast resort of Acapulco, according to Mexico’s national seismological agency.

Residents and tourists in Mexico City and Acapulco rushed into the streets when the shaking began.

President Claudia Sheinbaum calmly stopped her press conference when the 6.5 magnitude trembler shook the room and set off the country's earthquake alert system.

The quake shook Guerrero, Mexico, early Friday, disrupting Sheinbaum's first news conference of the year. Some residents rushed into the streets after hearing the Mexican Seismic Alert System, which was put into place following the deadly 1985 earthquake that killed at least 5,000 people.

Luciano Benavides continued his impressive form at the 2026 Dakar Rally by winning Stage 8 and moving into the overall lead after the longest special of this year’s event. The Red Bull KTM Factory Racing rider delivered a near-flawless performance on the 483-kilometer test, collecting maximum time bonuses and securing his third stage win of the rally.

Saood Variawa edged out Toyota team-mate Henk Lategan in the final dash to the finish line to claim victory in the eighth stage of the 2026 Dakar Rally.
Despite being the longest stage of the 48th edition of Dakar, the 483km special around Wadi ad Dawasir offered the closest competition so far in the rally, with the top eight drivers separated by just under a minute at the halfway point of the day.

Saturday morning, semi sunny and cold after a rainy night. Weird weather! Not having to much experience with area living here15 month but no recall rain at this time last year.
Anyway, glad this week is over after being impacted nby some sort of virus, not a flu, no fever but otherwise all flu symptoms, a real bad dry cough and respiration problems.
It was for several days REAL cold, that might be the reason for illness as well the construction crew on site - all members - coughing like crazy, they may passed on the bug.
The cold weather may also be reason for one of the La Media Luna pooches having a severe cold....
