Dear Singapore’s Christians, here's what the latest statistics reveal about singlehood and marriage.
Based on the latest General Household Survey published in June 2026, Rev Gilbert Lok analyses what the national statistics show about what’s going on in the lives of fellow Protestant Christians in Singapore.
He reminds us, "...it is crucial to remember that amid statistical analysis, we are careful not to treat people as mere numbers. After all, we Christians affirm that each person is an image-bearer of the God who formed this universe. Behind every number is a name."
Rev Gilbert Lok has undergraduate training in Economics (1st-class Honours, NUS), and postgraduate degrees in Divinity (TTC) and New Testament (Oxford). Formerly a civil servant, Gilbert now serves as a pastor at Barker Road Methodist Church.

Some may question whether he or she's the one, some may even do a SWOT analysis to balance the pros and cons in a person.
However, what is truly the question we want to ask when seeking a relationship?

"If he wanted to, he would..."
With social media, we often see the glorious moments in a relationship. The romantic dates, the beautiful and aesthetic flower bouquets, the thoughtful gifts etc..
When we see other people's partners put in that effort, we can't help but think "aw, that's so sweet" and wish our own partners just knew how we wanted to be loved, without us having to say a word.
But that's not usually how it works. It takes communication, intentional effort and patience to truly get to know one another.

The August issue of Methodist Message is out!
· The young and the homeless in Singapore
Last year, Homeless Hearts of Singapore (HHOS) received 164 requests for help and nearly half of these came from individuals below the age of 35. What were the circumstances that led them to their vulnerable circumstance?
· Kingdom perspective in estate planning
Is there a biblical perspective to wealth management, specifically, estate planning? Do we own our wealth, or are we merely stewards of the resources God has bestowed upon us?
· Menopause and the Christian woman
As women navigate busy lives, the physical and emotional changes that accompany the transition to menopause are rarely talked about.

You can also pick up the print edition at your church.

Our churches are made up of people from different age groups. Each generation has their different views, their different experiences and different concerns. As churches increasingly embrace intentional intergenerational ministry, creating spaces where young and old learn, serve and worship together, these differences are not always easy to navigate.
However, this August, Bishop Philip Lim reminds us that "the key to longevity in ministry is reciprocal learning: seniors offer wisdom, pastoral insight and vocational guidance; younger members bring fresh energy, technological savviness and new cultural engagement."
May we all look past our differences and focus on loving one another, and serving the Lord together in unity.

Just as Abraham did in Genesis 25:5-6, it is biblical to do estate planning—that is, deciding how your money and assets are to be divided when you die. The following is gleaned from a presentation by estate planning attorney Angelo Cabrera at the N5 Conference in 2022,1 a Kingdom-focused conference on personal finance. Mr Cabrera shared his wisdom on how to leave not just wealth but a true legacy to the next generation.

In her 40s, a woman may notice something shifting—fatigue, disrupted sleep, mood swings—and she can’t quite name it. It’s menopause, yet even though every woman will experience this, it is a topic rarely discussed. Drawing on insights from Dr Tay Ruixin, Rebecca Yong and Dr Adriel Rao at a recent WSCS talk at Wesley Methodist Church, Grace Tan explores what it means to steward the body and mind through this transition with compassion rather than criticism.
Grace Tan is a communications professional and worships at Wesley Methodist Church where she serves in the floral ministry.

Is age really just a number?
Dr Roland Chia shares, "The biblical view of old age is both realistic and radiant.
It is realistic because it does not sugarcoat decline. It is radiant because it emphasises the dignity of the elderly and their continuing role in the community and society."
Dr Roland Chia is Chew Hock Hin Professor of Christian Doctrine at Trinity Theological College and Theological and Research Advisor at the Ethos Institute for Public Christianity.

Happy 61st birthday, Singapore!
We're home to many races, languages and stories, yet woven together as one nation. On this birthday, let's pray for that unity to grow even stronger, in our homes, our communities and our nation.
We lift up our leaders, that they'll be guided with wisdom. We lift up the Church, that we'll be witnesses of love in word and deed. And we lift up Singapore, that she'll continue to be a place of peace and hope for all who call her home.
