In the giant 9/11 Witness Testimony PDF, there was zero mentions of the word "spark", just 1 mention of "sparkling", and 1 mention of "sparks", thus we can rule out thermite which generates LOTS of sparks.
On Page 13, Deputy Commissioner Thomas Fitzpatrick assumed the "windows, tinsel, or something" was causing the sparkling, and does not remember an explosion as South Tower fell.
On Page 5725, Fire Marshal Steven Heavey said there was a loud noise and the upper floors (of the South Tower) started pushing the dust, debris, and a shower of sparks due to a major structural failure.
