Man of Sorrows

For the grave of Prelate van Acken (1879-1937), which is
located in the corridor behind the crypt, Mataré created in 1941 the
Man of Sorrows, one of his greatest sculptures.
The embossed face, the delicate hands and feet give
this artwork by Mataré its strong expressive power.
The Man of Sorrows embodies Jesus as "Ecce homo",
whom Pilate presents to the people on Good Friday with a crown of thorns and a purple cloak.
In this form of depiction, Jesus is in solidarity with the
powerless and suffering, but not without a symbol
of hope in his left hand: a staff with suggested
buds.
It is made from a piece of wood (walnut), and Ma-
taré laments, while working on this artwork, the
cracks that appeared, which he filled in many places with small
pieces of wood.

im Gang hinter der Krypta befindet, schuf Matare 1941 en
Schrnerzerısmann, eine seiner großten Skulpturen.
Das geprägte Gesicht, die zarten Hände und Füße schen-
ken diesem Kunstwerk Matare ihre starke Ausdruckskraft.
Der Schmerzensrnann verkörpert Jesus als „Ecce homo'_',
den Pilatus mit Dornenkrone und Purpurmantel am Karfreı-
tag vor die Menschen stellt.
ln dieser Art der Darstellung ist Jesus solidarisch mit den
Ohnmächtigen und Leidenden, aber nicht ohne ein Hoff-
rıungssymbol in der linken Hand: ein Stab mit angedeute-
ten Knospen.
Es ist aus einem Holzstück (Nußbaum) geschaffen, und Ma-
taré beklagt, während er an diesem Kunstwerk arbeitet die
entstehenden Risse, die er an vielen Stellen mit kleinen
Holzstücken füllte.
